Newbie from Michigan- Lake St. Clair

Welcome, WiserTime. I have an old Sea Ray, too. Also on Lake St. Clair (at the Farms Pier). Hoping for a newer and bigger boat soon!

    New Boat Advice

The Sundecks are great all-around boats, either the 200 or 220. Besides basic water skiing and wakeboarding, their good for tubing, basic fishing and so on. Both have deep-V hulls, which deliver a superior ride. What you get with the Sundeck that you don't get with Selects, Sports or...

    Where to find used canvas?

You can find very large tarps at farm supply stores (Tractor Supply and the like). They have grommets, so you can jury rig it any way you want. For winter storage, it's simpler and easier to have it shrink wrapped. The shrink wrap can be re-used. On the other hand, it might be worth it to...

Brand new 48 Dancer for my Birthday!

I think that's my wife's preferred price point for a new boat!

    Big storm

Hi Peter, Glad your boat made it through the storms with minimal damage. I just talked to my wife's cousin in Sweden today. Not bad up there, but the weather has been very strange. So warm that the pre-planted crops are being destroyed in advance by some kind of Mexican worm (he's a farmer)...

The marina called this morning My boat is under water!!!!

Sorry you're having to go through this mess. Good thing you have a decent insurance guy. Was it Boat US? It will be very interesting to hear the complete story from the mechanics, once they troubleshoot the whole thing. We'll all want to hear that one.

    White or Blue Hull?

A beautiful, blue-hulled boat in Escanaba would be a real eye catcher. No UV issues to worry about up north and no salt. Go for it!

Cruise from Palm Beach to P.C., Fl in 4 days

Thanks for the great story and photos, Hampton. You've got a beautiful boat. Longer trips are so much fun. What better way to christen a new boat?

Do you tip the guy at the gas pump?

I always tip and people always notice, especially because I have an small, old boat and I don't think they expect it. Most of the kids on the gas docks around here will take your lines, fill the tank and generally be helpful. I don't give them a percentage, I just give them a few bucks. They...

Re-power question - single to twin

I have a 1980 Sea Ray 260 Weekender, nearly the same as your boat. I have a 350 Merc. In discussing repowering with my mechanic, I decided that twins were unworkable, for many reasons, including the need for new stringers. You probably won't be able to fit long blocks in the engine compartment...

    Anchoring Overnight

The GPS anchor alarm is the best way to quell her fears about drifting. If you can manage to anchor in sand, you won't have a problem. If you're having to share an anchorage with other boats, 7x depth in anchor rode isn't advisable unless you have a lot of room to swing. 3x with good holding...

    Trailering the 38DA

Jeff, you are a real wild man. Trailering a boat that size is incredible. I'd pay money to see the faces of the people at the launch ramp. I can see the bass boats running for cover. By the way, is it possible to board your boat from one of those low, launch ramp docks? It must be a sight to see!

    Older 460 EC

Thanks, BigAl. I noticed that in 1998 and into '99 the 380 hp Horizons were available. I wonder how much they improved performance (and efficiency) over the previous 310 hp. Does anyone have the 380 hp Horizons?

    Older 460 EC

Thanks, Bigal. The 370 looks like a great boat. What kind of cruising speed to you get, and what kind of engines? I have a need for speed, and so the attendant compromises with larger boats are always a challenge. I'm hoping to be able to cruise at 30 mph at times (longer trips). I noticed in...

    Older 460 EC

Thanks for your knowledgeable comments, Frank. I think I'm going to go back to thinking about a late 90's 370 or 400. They're more affordable for me and seem like a safer bet. I really appreciate your expertise!

    Older 460 EC

Thanks for the comment. The one I'm most interested in has new stainless steel engine mounts. Anyone have any idea how loud those old Detroit Diesels are?

    Older 460 EC

I'm looking for comments on the late 80's 460 EC with 550HP Detroit Diesel 6V92 engines. There are several on the used market that seem to be in great shape. It's my understanding that the old 6V92s have the ability to run forrever with proper maintenance. True? Are rebuilds required at 1000...

    Grosse Pointe Farms

Thanks. I can't wait for the summer. I hardly got to do any boating this past year. Too much work and too much travel. Hope to do more boating in '07 (and buy a newer and bigger boat, too).

    Grosse Pointe Farms

You mean with I/Os I could cruise at 30?

    Grosse Pointe Farms

I'm undecided on drives. I like the idea of inboards, but I like the extra speed of I/Os. I wish Sea Ray put more emphasis on speed (as an option), like Formula does. My ideal boat would be able to cruise at 30 mph all day, with a top end near 40. Compromises, compromises!
