I went ahead and ordered all the components for a hydraulic system.they are actually being delivered tomorrow. Got everything except the fluid. Figured I could get that local. Yes I'm a little impatient...lol. shopped around and marineengineparts.com had some decent prices and they are in NY...
Went to launch my AJ this past weekend and found the steering was locked up. Disconnected it at the stern to make sure it wasn't the drive and the drive turns easy so must be the cable. Looks like the original cable in there. Only marking I could find was HEAVY DUTY RIDE GUIDE 20 ft 6 in...
Just spotted this post while doing some research on alternate steering systems. My 85 Amberjacks steering is locked up and since its the original, its time for an update since they don't make these cables anymore. Not exactly sure what all types are better than others between the different...
Hey BigJoe,
I dont get on here as much as I used to but there's quite few AJ owners on here.
I guess alot of them dont get on much either.
Mines an 85 255 AJ thats been getting upgraded a little at a time.
I have some pics of mine in this thread...
When I had a leak It came from a bad seal at the pivot arm on my bravo1. not sure if the B3 has the same problem or not but the bravo1's all seam to leak there eventually. Not only was the pivot arm seal leaking, my transom assembly was rotted threw underneath causing a leak. It was very hard to...
Re: Considering a repower next winter...or a bigger SR...I think I need an interventi
The 383 stroker is also an engine package I thought about before getting the 496 MAG.
The lighter engine may have even performed better but i think I didnt go that route because I dont think it comes with...
I went without the gloss top coat and find its glossy enough without it.
Got 3 years maintenace free out of it and could probably go longer but this spring I'll give it a light sanding and add another coat.
Nice job CC and thanks for the post and pics.
Plan on re-bedding my windshield one of these days.
The amberjacks dont have a center windshield support and the front frames are a bit wobly.
Are talking about the black plastic knob?
Mine is cracked and loose and moves around on me which can be a real PITA when docking.
How are they even attached? Thought there may be a set screw but didnt notice any.
Mine is a single with the trim button on top.
Here is a better version of manual 11 if you need it. Couldnt find anything on the site you posted.
I see what you were talking about now. torquing down to 150# is for bravo1's with shims.
read pages 3B-37 thru 39 and you see that bravo1's with a load ring (crushable washer) instead of shims...
Dont want to argue with you but everything i've read (mercruiser repair manual #28) and also from watching the videos in the link I posted above shows the rolling resistance/bearing pre-load needs to be done on the lower (at the drive shaft and the prop shaft). Setting the rolling resistance is...
Thanks for the reply
After some more research I found that you need to seperate the lower from the upper to properly change the shaft seals.
Actually it could be done without removing the drive but you wont be able to set the rolling resistance or bearing pre-load without seperating the drive...
I have oil leaking from my outdrive and hope its just the prop shaft seals.
Does anyone know if the seals can be replaced without pulling the drive or splitting the drive?
from what ive researched i believe I will need a special tool (bearing carrier nut wrench) to remove the bearing carrier...
Nice work so far.
While that engine is out and after cleaning up the bilge, get yourself a quart of bilge paint. It will look like new again and also seal everything up. The grey at west marine is a pretty close match to the original.
Been wanting to soda blast my bottom as well. $300 doesn't sound bad.
Did the soda blasting remove the barrier coat? If so you'll need a new coat of that before bottom painting.
I would think any waterproof filler would be fine. I've used epoxy filler on my pulpit and its good stuff but a lil...
