New boat, not a SeaRay - but I'm not leaving

I love the comparisons to a Sea Ray. A Cobalt has ALWAYS been a much-higher quality than a Sea Ray. Don't hate me. I've owned 4 Sea Rays!

    Under powered with 7.4 motors

Gas will push them fine, but they will burn a lot of fuel. Diesel will do it more efficiently and certainly not be working as hard, but you'll have all kinds of fun working on them in the engine room of a 40 bridge, and grab your ankles when major work is needed. If you are just cruising...

1989 390 Sundancer leak after water tank replaced

depending on how long it was leaking, I've seen it re-appear in the storage area through a crack in the floor. What I mean is that the water from the saturated foam and wood would come back up through the floor and into the storage area. I'd start checking water lines, shower sump, etc. I...

    Old Quicksilver 7.5 Generator

Dave is dead-on, on all accounts. You can't really get any parts from Quicksilver, but as soon as you figure out what else used that engine, you should be able to get all the engine parts that aren't Quicksilver-specific. This is the case with all marine generators.

What is/would be your engine of choice in a 37 to mid 40s Cruiser

Gas. People will chime in and say diesel, and yes, they have their advantages, but for the usage you're talking about, they really won't be worth it.

Never had a boat, going to look at a Sea Ray 440 AC tomorrow. What should I pay attention to?

Im with JC. Not everyone is a moron, and most people can figure out a boat. Find someone who knows how to drive twins, and have them show you how, then practice on your own. You can figure it out. As far as ships' systems, learn to read and you can figure those out too. I highly doubt you'll...

    Anyone ever rebuild a 496?

I'm sure the hull will survive just fine, and some more hp will probably make it perform better, not worse. I do agree that the cost/value is the only real issue here.

    Paint Color???

Any decent auto paint supply store can scan it and come up with a color formula. Don't listen to anyone says they can only be painted with Awlgrip. It's simply just not true. several of the different paints in the DuPont ( Axalta) line are fantastic, and Imron is even better than Awlgrip.

    Generator replacement

I guess I'm the only naysayer who can't figure out for the life of me why you'd ever downsize a generator.

    Window Rebuild 1986 Sundancer 268 (268DA)

I've purchased all those products from Taylor, but I couldn't tell you what it cost at the moment. I remember they weren't cheap, but nothing on a boat is. 1. I believe the rubber you're talking about it Butyl Tape. You can get it at an auto parts store probably a lot cheaper than Taylor. I...

You should be able to buy a laundry tub faucet and unscrew the spout and screw the hose on where the spout goes.

    Opinion on Carver

My experience with many different brands of boats was entirely different than Pascoes. Personally, I think he was a bit of an ass.

    Upper Gimbal Swivel Pin

Well, I have access to a full machine shop, so I took mine off, welded the worn sides out, and machined them back down to the correct size. Total cost = only my time :). If I were to do it again, I'd source a stainless pin. There are several horrible design choices in the Merc setup, and the...

    39' EC 1988 a few questions and

ElectricalDoctor has it right. You have to remove the teak at the top of the door, and if i remember correctly, you SLIGHTLY deflect the door a little bit, and you can pop it out. He's also right that screen door hardware works. I bought rollers at Lowes, believe it or not.

    Opinion on Carver

My family had a 1987 Carver 38 Aft Cabin from 1998-2018. It was a great boat. In many ways it was better than my 39 Sea Ray of the same general vintage (1989). In some ways my Sea Ray was better (better gelcoat for one thing). Overall however, I do think the Carver had my Sea Ray beat. the...

    Need Voice of Reason

From my experience with surveyors, I wouldn't waste my time or my money on them, especially for a smaller boat without lots of systems. Moisture issues are some of the biggest problems for a boat, and since it doesn't live in the water, this is mostly negated. As far as the powertrain, all...
