    Rusty steering arm - photo

The steering arm that connects the rudders on my 330 is rusting. This is way in the back of the bilge and difficult to access. Has anyone else seen this? I have thought about cleaning and painting but it would be a tough chore and the tab where the power steering actuator connects needs to be...

Feeling lucky...fuel in bilge did not ignite

5 miles offshore on Friday I started smelling fuel and noticed that my port gas guage was dropping rapidly. As I was slowing I realized my bilge pump was running as well. Opened the bilge...and it was swirling with gasoline. Probably 10+ gallons. Shut down, put on PFD's, call CG and Sea Tow. The...

Table saw that won't take off your finger

A buddy in the office took a chunk off his finger in the table saw the other day. His doctor told him that there were now flesh sensing saws that would prevent this kind of injury. I had never heard of it...but apparently it is true. I thought the DIY crowd might be interested...

    Whale report for Stellwagen

Have any of you found a site that reports on whale activity in the area (particularly Stellwagen)? Last year it seemed like most of the activity was off P-Town and not up in our neck of the woods (Gloucester). It would save some time (and gas) to know where the activity was greatest. Any advice?

    More Dinghy Angst: Acti-V?

I'm interested in opinions on Acti-V high pressure floor dinghies. I want to use the dinghy to zip around the marina area and will take it cruising only 2-3 times per year. I back into my slip with a partial dock finger on one side only (and the neighbor's go fast on the other) with wind and...

Does anyone follow the 'rules of the road'?

I was coming through the Annisquam River on Saturday (a narrow channel full of traffic) when I see a 40 foot sailboat under sail :wow: coming toward me down the middle (the guy was nuts to sail the channel, but that's his problem). I am only going just above idle speed, but the channel is narrow...

    Holding tank mystery?

I opened the holding tank seacock last weekend and left it open because it is so hard to get at that if I ever decided to dump offshore (outside 3 miles of course) I would be unable to get to it if the engines were hot. After two weekends staying on the boat, I checked the holding tank level...

    Rib vs. HP-V

Looking for advice on my first inflatable. Our primary use will be ~1 mile rides from our marina to the beach but I may put davits on our (soon to be delivered) 330 DA in the future. My question is RIB vs. slats vs. HP-V. West Marine has an article pushing HP-V which makes them sound like a good...

Turn up the speakers and melt the ice

If you have cabin fever like the rest of us northerners, turn off your lights, turn up your speakers and play this video. If it doesn't melt the ice nothing will. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SjgH0eNAqs&feature=related I know nothing about the product. Just psyched to watch the video...

    Cleaning fresh water tank

I noticed in another thread some discussion about sanitizing the fresh water tank. I have never done this, although I have not had any bad taste or odor in the water. Am I overlooking an important maintenance task? How and how often?

    Upgrade my 280 to a 330?

Got the bug at the boat show :smt021. I'm thinking of upgrading to a 330 in order to get more space in the mid cabin, a sun pad on the bow and a helm seat that can be shared with the admiral. Any opinions on a new '08 330DA with 8.1 v-drives? Thanks for any thoughts or advice...

Minor coolant loss on 5.0 EFI

I have been finding my port engine coolant overflow to be dropping (I have a closed coolant system). I am losing a few cups during several hours (like 2-3) of operation. I don't see any evidence of coolant in the bilge, but I am going to go over all the connections and hoses this weekend. I did...

    Wellfleet Harbor Local Knowledge

We are headed to Wellfleet this weekend for the first time with a slip reserved through the harbormaster. I was doing trip planning over the weekend and was surprised to see that the harbor has only 1-2 foot depths showing past the channel. Spoke to the harbormaster this morning and was told not...

    Engine trying to start itself!!

1am last night we were tucked in the V-berth with heavy showers outside. I wake up to vibration and noise - and after a couple of minutes banging around I realize MY STARBOARD ENGINE IS CRANKING :wow::wow::wow:. It had probably been going for 5-10 minutes. Never fired, but the starter was...

    Mid Season Hull Cleaning

Looking for some advice on hull cleaning in the Northeast. We are in the water from April to October and last year the hull had a small forest growing on it by the end of the season. Can I use a stiff brush (and a scuba tank?) and brush off the growth mid season? I don't want to do anything that...

    Frustrating lessons installing Raymarine SHS

I took on one (seemingly) simple project this year: installing a smart heading sensor on my E80. A year ago I realized that the problems I was having with MARPA and the radar 'wake' function was due to lack of the SHS. Seemed like a simple enough install. After about 15 hours of work, I now have...
