Are there any performance differences between V drives and straight inboards? I know you could never do a comparison with the same hull since a boat would only be offered with on or the other.

You definitely need to take the Coast Guard course. You should also hire a captain for a day. You'll be glad you did. I would not store an outdrive boat in the water over the winter. Bow thruster is nice to have. I have it and use it. It's not a necesity.
