That yacht was in Newport this past weekend, docked at Gurney's (Goat Island ). All the big toys were out.

496 8.1 Elbows leaking. Saved motor!! READ

Hope you get them soon. While I was waiting for them I checked compression. ZERO on a cylinder on each engine. It was being caused by stuck exhaust valve, same cylinder that would get the most water from the leaking elbows. I got it cleaned up and unstuck without having to pull the heads...

496 8.1 Elbows leaking. Saved motor!! READ

I received my 4 new elbows on Wednesday. They just showed up without any notification to my marina. Rumor has it they are back in stock at mercury for those that need them!

496 8.1 Elbows leaking. Saved motor!! READ

I made the measurements last night... To violate the Mercruiser rules using "standard elbows" the water level in the lift mufflers would have to come within an inch of the top of them. The angle in the exhaust tubes with the 2" elbows is 22° compared to 15° using the standard elbows. On my...

Yup just found that out this morning.............. Also was warned that that is the best-case as my marina parts guy said they have had orders take double the predicted time. I haven't returned them yet, going to make some measurements tomorrow. Perusing the Mercury "GASOLINE ENGINE 8.1S...

496 8.1 Elbows leaking. Saved motor!! READ

Don't do it, sediment is most likely blocking the tiny hole in the weld. On the photo I attached that elbow didn't leak sitting overnight filled with water, not a single drop. Then I shook it and pressurized to 10 psi and the little stream of water appeared. I then put it in a 200°F oven and the...

496 8.1 Elbows leaking. Saved motor!! READ

Funny story, just opened the boxes for the new elbows and they look short to me. I have them the serial numbers so would have thought the correct ones were ordered. It appears I also need to return the standard elbows and order the ones with 2” rise. Can anyone confirm we all use the 2”...

Same issue for us on our 340. Was doing some spring maintenance and pulled the elbows to find the horror of severe manifold corrosion and clearly some water was getting to the valves on one side of each engine. Lucky that most of the water drains through the dripless or it may have cost us the...

What can cause shaft wear this bad?

I think I'm going to undue the clamps on the other Tides seal. Should be able to slide it forward enough to see the shaft where the seal sits. If that one looks the same, it will also get changed. The boat is a 2004 and has the newer Tides seal ( with the 5 screws ) so at some point the shafts...

What can cause shaft wear this bad?

New boat, new problems. We knew there was an issue with the shaft and made a deal accordingly. I figured I would just adjust the Tides seal forward on the log and get away with the season but that only made the water coming in worse. It looked like the seal housing was wobbling. I put an...

    Dinghy on Sundancer 280

Hello, We purchased the H2O davits to try and use our Caribe dink on our 280DA. The goal was to be able to get on and off the boat without stepping in or on the dinghy. The 36" option allows this occur though it causes some additional headaches we are still working out. Problem #1: Our Caribe...
