Marina recommendation for Chesapeake upper Eastern Shore area?

Hi y'all, the Admiral and are are spending a weekend in Cape May later this month. We'd like to split the return trip into two leisurely days and spend the night somewhere between Chesapeake City and Worton Creek. Any marina recommendations for us? I've heard good things about the Sassafras...

    What do you say when........

Yeah, that's rather rude to start diesel engines and allow them to idle for a long time, especially when nearby boats have people aboard. The Cummins on my SR definitely produce smoke and fumes when running, especially before they're warmed up. The diesel smell doesn't bother me but the...

Do you have DSC / GPS / MMSI configured?

When I got my 2005 390 Motor Yacht it had a Raymarine VHF with an MMSI from the previous owner. The radio seemed to have some problems transmitting too, so I sent it to Raymarine. They fixed the transmitter problem and also lobotomized it to remove the old MMSI. I got an FCC radio station...

    Yet another likely CO tragedy

It would be nice to know some details. Was it a legitimate marine genset, or some kind of Rube Goldberg contraption? Gas or diesel? Did the boat have CO alarms?

    Hate boating on Holidays.

Ha! The Admiral and I are going to anchor near Annapolis Harbor on the 4th. Planning to arrive late afternoon and sit on the hook until after the fireworks end, probably in the Southern Anchorage to the southeast of the Naval Academy. I can imagine there will be some drunk idiots out there.

    Tipping Dock masters.

I wouldn't say it's too much, but it's a lot more than what I tip. The most I usually tip is $5 in and $5 out. If the service is not so good I'll probably just give $5 total. The most I've ever given is $20 total. Perhaps I'm being stingy?

July 4th (or 3rd) Fireworks in Annapolis and surrounding area

Hey there, in all my years of boating in the Chesapeake I've never been on the water for July 4th fireworks. This year the admiral wants to give it a try. I know there's a pretty good display from Annapolis Harbor on the 4th. Anyone have any suggestions? We're not big on sleeping on the...

Summer 2018 Vacation (Middle Chesapeake Bay)

We keep our boat in the Kent Narrows, so St Michaels is a quick day trip and we go there a couple times a year. My go-to place to dock is Higgins Yacht Yard. It's more of a service-type marina than a nice place for transients, but the location is terrific if you want to walk into town and get...

    Atlantic City Marina Recommendations

Hello everyone, the admiral and I are planning a little cruise to NJ in mid-July and want to stay in AC for one or two nights. It will probably be Wednesday-Thursday, so we won't be there over a weekend. We'd like to be within walking distance of casinos/restaurants, preferably not a loud...

    Replacing Norcold cockpit fridge

Is there anyone who doesn't have a complaint about these crappy Norcold refrigerators? The one in my cockpit failed last year and the galley one seems to be going downhill. I like the idea of getting a 120v-only fridge for the cockpit that would probably be 1/5 the price of the Norcold.

How do you find a good surveyor?

I'm a member of the US Power Squadrons. Last year when I needed a surveyor in New York I contacted the Port Captain from the nearest Power Squadron. Port Captains are squadron members who have volunteered to help USPS members and other boaters by recommending marine businesses and other "local...

38 - 40ft SeaRay which diesel engine is best?

Personally I think the Cummins C-Series engines (420/450 CTA, 480CE, QSC, etc) are the finest modern marine engines. They are not bulletproof however. It's important that they not be overpropped and maintenance of the seawater-cooled stuff, especially the aftercoolers, is critical. Seaboard...

    Est cost

On my delivery cruise last year I learned firsthand what it costs to repair props after I ran aground in one of those New Jersey inlets. The 24" 4-bladed nybral props had light damage only, cost about $875 for the pair.

Proper wrench for Groco strainer cap

Hey everyone, my 390 Motor Yacht has four Groco strainers in the engine room. One for each Cummins engine, one for the genset, and one for the AC. My boat came with a Perko-brand spanner wrench with two sizes of pins which I normally use for the deck fill caps. I assumed it would work to...

Gas Docks Around Inner Harbor Baltimore

I prefer gas docks that pump larger quantities. In the Inner Harbor, Baltimore Marine Center-Inner Harbor is the one next to Rusty Scupper and they sell a lot of fuel. A lot of big yachts buy their fuel there so they definitely sell a lot of diesel, but they seem to sell a lot of gasoline too.

Last time I removed vinyl letters from my boat I grabbed a heat gun and plastic scraper, but found the scraper by itself was all I needed.
