How best to remove broken & rusted bolt in block

I went back with some anti seize. I realize this does change the torque spec and retention , but these are working bolts that are going to be loosened/tightened on a regular basis. I'd prefer not to drill these out ever again. I think I'll just replace the bolds when I do the belts.

    Add EZ-Oil valves to 3126 Coolant J-Pipe

Installed both sides today. I left the expansion tank cap on and removed the plug/oring. Inserted EZ Oil and tightened down. About 2 cups spilled into a waiting pan as I got the valve installed. Its under a little bit of vacuum so very easy swap. Still need to add a plug to the end of the...

How best to remove broken & rusted bolt in block

These bolts for you CAT owners (I'll bet Cummin is the same) are hardened 10.9 bolts, so tough stuff. My recommended steps after all this is basically the same. If you can isolate the part your trying to remove the bolt/stud from, I think welding a nut/washer on is a good idea. On a whole...

How best to remove broken & rusted bolt in block

I actually bought a welder for this project, but a dock neighbor who's a welder by trade, cautioned me to not use the welder on the assembled engine as there are too many electrical/electronics on the engine and they may not survive the welding amps/voltage. All the videos I saw and viewed were...

Thats the heat exchanger, and should have water flow thru it to keep it cool. Can you confirm there is water coming out the thru hull? If no or low flow water something wrong with the raw water pump. The pump breaker may be tripped, or your raw water is clogged up. Check the strainer basket...

ZF 280 Transmission oil sample has high sodium

Is this the original transmission fluid? Without looking at the report/other levels and it’s only a single report, so no trends. Could be a corrosion inhibitor. Could be some salt water intrusion. It also could be a bad sample or test. The point of entry would have to be the transmission...

Cost to install Koehler/Westerbeke Generator on Sea Ray 280/290

Well.. For that amount you could install an inverter and Lithium battery system sufficient to run the AC over night, maybe 2, plus about anything else you might want to run. You would have to charge with shore power. But might be an option. $2k for a nice inverter $6k for 800Ah of batteries...

Cost to install Koehler/Westerbeke Generator on Sea Ray 280/290

Are you at this size for trailerability? If not, bump up to at least @ 310/320, or a little older 340. If your going to be spending enough time to need a generator, 340 is a great boat. If you still want a 280/290. A new genny is about 12k - 15k plus install and various accessories. I’d...

How best to remove broken & rusted bolt in block

Drilled it out and ran a tap thru it to clean it up. That was a 12 hour job all to remove a 50 cent bolt. New CAT bolts all around and going back with some anti seize on the threads.

How best to remove broken & rusted bolt in block

Spent all day alternating between heat and penetrant oil, then working with a chisel. No joy. Tomorrow I’m going to grind the face flat and attempt to drill it out. I like the idea of a carbide bit as another option.

Parts and tools on hand. After watching a bunch of bolt removal videos...here's the plan. 1. Penetrant. Douse it let it sit. 2. Heat & Hammer - I have an old oxy MAPP torch that I hope can get some concentrated heat on the bolt, then try loosening with a punch and hammer. 3. Drill and EZ Out...

    Systems Monitor failure

Link failure is likely a bad connection on the coax running from the box in the engine room to the display. Make sure the connections are clean and tight. You can test using a cheap coax cable.
