Re: Are there any honest, competent and affordable marine mechanics/repair facilities
That's right. Boating is a luxury, and bears a luxury price. Besides, $50 over on a PHONE estimate is good.
First, there is NO automatic startup function on these Kohler generators. It is a malfunction with the ADC computer system on the genset, and needs to be corrected by a Kohler dealer.
Notice I didn't say 'issue'. It is a major safety PROBLEM when your equipment starts on its own. You're lucky...

This is YOUR thread originally, and others have hijacked it. You need the Onan service manual for proper diagnosis of your electrical problem. Good luck!
The remote digital gauge will not clear a fault code. You have to reset the controller at the genset. If a genuine fault code came up, you'd want to know what it is, anyway.
The generator should have it's own dedicated battery. This is in the installation manual. All good boat manufacturers...
You probably have the Kohler 5ECD genset with the 2" digital remote gauge. It needs to have the digital controller reprogrammed by a Kohler dealer. This should solve the problem.

A spun hub in the impeller is a defect. Check with whoever you bought the part from for their new parts warranty policy.
Other than that, the small Sherwood impeller will last about 1 year after it's been exposed to water. That's why the owners manual recommends replacing it yearly.
It's not a temp sensor, it's a water pressure switch.... exactly like an oil pressure switch, except it breaks contact @ approx 1.5 psi raw water pressure.
Yes, it can fail. It's just an idiot light switch.
