    Rubber Engine Components

All input welcome. I'm a new boat owner who's fairly mechanical. I recently purchased a 1994 230DA which I've come to the conclusion sat idle for quite a while before I bought it. Only had 200 original hours on the engine but I've already had two rubber components fail, the diaphragm in the...

    install Keg system on boat

From a practical standpoint I would think you'd find the keg spouting nothing but foam every time you tried to poor yourself a beer. I'd just fill up some growlers with your home brew or favorite local brew and enjoy RESPONSIBLY.

    Coupler Failure

Thanks all and no worries about offending me Shawn, I have thick skin and I'm hoping this thread may be useful to another inexperience boater who may experience a similar issue in the future. The bottom of the boat is a bit rough with hard water stains. I believe the previous owners left it in...

    What would you guys suggest?

I would just get a used chart plotter fish finder off ebay sold without a tranducer and just run it without installing a ducer to use the charting option. Should be able to do that fairly cheaply and if by chance you ever wanted to use the depth finding aspect of it all you need to do is buy...

OOPS...that was Dennis explaining ventilation and cavitation not Cliff. Sorry Dennis :)

    Coupler Failure

So I just wanted to update everyone after my sea test today and turns out I've got a lot to learn about my boat. Coupler seems fine so I believe I was just ventilating or cavitating (have to go back and read cliff's post LOL). I did discover my trim gauge is way off the mark so I was running...

    Max RPM 4,000

Is 5300 - 5500 within the engine specs? What is the size and pitch of your prop? Is it the same prop as when you were getting the higher speed?

    230 Sundancer (mid 90's)

Hi All, I'm looking for help setting up my V-Berth for a 1994 230DA. This is my first cabin cruiser so I'm a total newbie when it comes to V-berths. I see two metal (I'll call them brackets) on the bench seating aft toward the end of the seats. Is there suppose to be some sort of brace that...

    Coupler Failure

I will investigate that as soon as I'm able to run it up to WOT. Prop is 14.5d 19p 4 blade so I'm fairly sure that isn't too high but I will double check for WOT rpm which I believe for my 230da 5.7L Mercruiser is 4200 - 4600

    Coupler Failure

I will Cliff but I would have thought if the splines were the cause of the failure there would have been a noise associated with the slipping problem. In my case it was all normal sounding just slippage which I interpreted as a failed bond between the rubber and metal portions of the coupler...

    Coupler Failure

Heard back from the mechanic who did the job last month and thankfully he said he will make things right. Turns out it was someone on his staff, who he has since fired, who did the work. I'm stressing that the why is very important to me, so much so that I'll take vacation time from work to be...

    Coupler Failure

Don't get discouraged by others Molson. I appreciate you input and may in the end wind up doing this myself but for now I'm planning on asking the guy how replaced the coupler last month to make things right unless I can identify another reason for the increased rpm with lack of power to plane...

    Coupler Failure

Forgot to add regarding limping home with failed coupler. My understanding is that couplers can fail in two different ways. The metal can sheer where the spline from the drive contacts the coupler, where you are correct I would not have been able to limp home. Or the rubber can heat up and...

    Coupler Failure

I just purchased the boat back in Sept last year so I'm running the prop the previous owners had on the boat. I do not have a stainless steal prop, it's a 4 blade 14.5 D 18P and the hub is plastic so it's fairly easy to see if the hub has broken or not. I am positive the hub is fine...totally...

    Coupler Failure

So I took the prop in today to get checked out and all is fine with the prop. Hub looks good. Going to pull the drive off this Saturday to check the yolk shaft on the drive, per BillK, but the guy at the shop who checked the prop assured me that if the shaft were bad I would not have been able...

    Coupler Failure

Bt Doctur...I was never told why the original one failed. I assumed it was miss-aligned engine. I only wish the new one lasted 20 hours...it failed in less than 4 hours of operation which is why I'm so perplexed as to the cause.

    Coupler Failure

I'm 99% sure. Once I remove the prop and double check the hub I'll remove any doubt but the way I was able to limp home yesterday has be pretty confident it's the coupler again. There is no cone clutch in the Alpha to my knowledge but I'm a newbie as I've only had this boat a little over 4 months

    Coupler Failure

The gimbal bearing was not replaced on the original coupler job. Mechanic didn't recommend it and I didn't see the need for it as the boat, even though 20 years old, had less than 400 original hours on it when I bought it. Feeling a bit like that Charlie Brown character walking around with a...
