1990 420 - Need help locating water temp help sensor for alarm panel

The alarm panel on my 1990 420 Express Cruiser (the boat shaped panel at the helm with idiot lights and buzzers) is indicating "high water temp" on my starboard engine above 2,400 RPM's. The gauges show normal and IR readings correspond with the gauges. The sensor for the gauges (Cat 3208TA's)...

    3208TA Boost/RPM issue

1990 3208/375 - new (Cat Reman) turbos over the winter. Previous to the replacement, I showed 7PSI of boost at 2,400 RPM cruise speed (18kts) and topped out at 2,850 RPM. Immediately after the replacement I can only get 2,200 RPM at 7PSI and I lost over 400RPM of top end. I've read that I should...

    Water temp false alarm

I just had the turbos replaced on my 1990 Caterpillar 3208 TA’s Now I’m getting a high water temperature alarm on the starboard motor. All gauges read normal and I shot the engines with an infrared thermometer and nothing seems to be out of spec. Any ideas as to what could be causing the false...

    Bonding block corrosion

I keep getting corrosion which looks like what you see on a poorly maintained battery terminal appearing on my port side bonding block. The starboard side doesn't have the same problem. Anyone else dealt with this or know what causes it?

Draining ZF V Drives with a vaccum evacuater

I have a maintenance question on draining my ZF Vdrives. I can't get my hand all the way down to the drain plug (and it's too close to the bulkhead) so I sucked the oil out from the dipstick/fill hole. However I only got about a liter and a half out and the manual says capacity is 7 liters. Any...

ZF IRM301 failed - fix seems crazy...

So last fall I contracted with a marine gear specialist to solve my failed trans problem - IRM301 P1 - and the specialist suggested a new trans. He said rebuilding the old 301 would cost just as much and I wouldn't have a warranty. I agreed. The new trans is a ZF IRM301C. First issue - I had to...

    Removing a ZF IRM301 P1

I was just advised that possibly due to a past overheating event the clutches on my port transmission have worn. I'm looking at replacement some time in the future - hopefully later than sooner. When it is time do I have to remove the engine and transmission as a unit or can they be separated...

ZF IRM301 P1 question about oil strainer

Does the 301P1 have one? At the end of last season the port trans started going into gear mushily (new word) and I'm concerned about the pump or clutches. That trans spins the shaft slowly in neutral which could indicate some issues with the clutches. I haven't tried it since the haul and...

    Checking ZF trans oil level

New owner here so please indulge a dumb question: when I pull he dipstick to check trans fluid I get one reading. When I put it back in and read it again it's always higher. It seems like there's pressure that gets released when I pull the stick. Which reading is correct? Has anyone else...

Have a quick question about fuel hose size

I first searched the forums but couldn't find the answer. I want to replace my deck fills on my 1990 420 Sundancer with Cat 3208 diesels. What size fill do I buy? Or put another way what is the fuel hose size? First post here, seems like a phenomenal site!
