How hard should I punch the mechanic?

Well, I've been stewing on this one for a while, and it's time to figure out what to do. I'm selling my boat, so I moved it to a new marina in a more active boating region with a decent brokerage, but it's now several hours from my house. After dropping the boat off in November, I wasn't able to...

    2000 310 Sundancer

Planning a big move this year, so it's time to let her go. http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/2000/Sea-Ray-310-Sundancer-2914132/Deltaville/VA/United-States#.VocOE1JQ5_c

Westerbeke 4.5 BCGB won't stay on

Some might recall my bad governor post - it is fixed and installed, but now I can't run the generator. It starts fine using the Preheat (bypass) switch, but as soon as I release the switch it shuts down. Actually, it takes several seconds - it opens the choke all the way and then after 2-3...

Gas fumes are dangerous (as if we didn't already know)

I just went down to the marina for the first time this month (work has been busy), and learned about this: http://wtvr.com/2015/04/01/person-med-flighted-after-boat-fire-in-appomattox/ The story on that site covers most of the detail I was able to get. I was told that the boat owner is still...

    Need new GPS/Chartplotter

My Garmin 740s died at the end of the season and I haven't been able to repair it, so I need to find a replacement. While I would love to do a full electronics upgrade and replace the Raytheon RL70/radar and Furuno FCV600L fish finder as well, the boat dollar fund is running short. My...

    Generator problem, bad governor

The governor on my Westerbeke 4.5 BCGB is bad, and I need to find a replacement. Unfortunately, this part is apparently made from moon dust and unicorn farts, and they want close to $2K for a new one. I looked for an alternative direct from the manufacturer (Hoof Products, model BD94BNP), but...

Need a generator mechanic near Richmond VA

My Westerbeke 4.5 BCGB stopped putting out voltage a couple weeks ago. It actually puts out enough to make the needle move in the panel, but not very far. I had a guy helping me troubleshoot it and he found that the capacitor was bad, but replacing it hasn't made any difference. I think I'm at...

Question - what are the poles in the river for?

Every time I see them, I mean to ask. The poles I am talking about are thin (usually only an inch or so in diameter), extend at least 5+ feet above the water line, and are usually laid out in a straight line in clusters from 3-10 (or so). I've never seen an explanation of what they are for, but...

    Throttle slipping

Anytime I have the throttles near idle (under about 1750 RPM), they won't hold, and will drop back to the fast idle position. I know that there are adjustments for tension and stops, but I'm concerned about making them too stiff for smooth operation. I haven't tried adjusting them yet but I...

    Outdrive Corrosion

I recently pulled my 310 out for the winter, and found that the Bravo 3 outdrives are showing some heavy buildup on the skeg, and light buildup on some other areas. The reason I say "buildup" is that it mostly appears to be buildup on the surface, instead of pitting into the surface. I haven't...

    120 volt cabin light switch

I did a stupid and put a 12v E14 LED bulb into a 120 volt socket in the cabin (that'll teach me to double check the part description before ordering). It obviously failed, and in a very spectacular fashion, but it also seems to have taken out the switch as well. The switch now "defaults" to the...

    Access to plugs/wires on 454 engines in a 2000 310

The exhaust manifold runs right up to structure on the outboard side of both engines. I don't see a way to access the plugs and wires without removing the manifold and riser. Is this correct, or is there a better way? The manifolds/risers are new, so it should just take new gaskets to do the job...

    Starboard engine not keeping pace

I'm on my first real cruise, and I've noticed that my starboard engine sometimes doesn't seem to have a lot of "grunt". I'm in a 2000 310 with twin 7.4's. After about an hour of cruising at around 3200 RPM, I noticed that my speed was falling off. Revs were down a bit, so I gave it a little...

Attaching bike fork mounts to swim platform - fastener advice needed

I plan to attach two bicycle fork mounts to my swim platform, but I want them to be removable in a way that leaves no obstructions/trip points on the platform. Unfortunately I can't find exactly what I'm looking for to fasten them down, so I'm down to plan B. So far here's my plan: Mount two of...

Recommendations for viewing fireworks in coastal VA

We are doing a cruise of the lower Chesapeake Bay the week of the 4th, and would like to anchor out somewhere decent to watch fireworks on the 4th. My initial thought was the Yorktown show, but looking at the situation around there makes me think it will be VERY crowded on the water, and there...

Are there good places to anchor on the James

I'm looking for some nice spots to anchor for a weekend. I would prefer sticking reasonably close to Richmond, but I'm open to heading down towards Williamsburg. I can take the little boat out exploring, but would rather get some good advice first and not waste a ton of time searching for spots...

    Screens for top

I was wondering if anyone has found a good way to add screens to their top. We have a camper top on our 310, and the eisenglass on each side and back panel has U-shaped sections that unzip and roll up. I haven't been able to think up a good way to add screens so we can have some ventilation...

Lofran windlass won't lower, always raises

Been doing a lot of cleaning and learning on the new 310, and decided to try the windlass today (Lofran Progress I). I knew ahead of time that the foot switches were flakey (surveyor said so), but was told that it operated normally from the dash switch. However, today I found that no matter...

Is it possible to interface with 2000 era System Monitor

My new boat (2000 310 Sundancer w/twin 7.4) has this System Monitor panel: Since it's a 3 wire interface, that makes me think that it might be using a standard communication protocol. I was wondering if any of the stock systems are transmitting NMEA, or similar, codes that can be used up by...

Replacing thru-hull transducer with different brand

My new boat has an (apparently) dead Furuno FCV 600L, with a thru-hull transducer. I would like to switch to a Garmin unit (mainly because I have a 546s that I can use for now). I am just hoping that I can simply replace the transducer without changing the thru-hull fitting/fairing block. Are...
