I would take it out for a ride. Those engines have a bad rep. However my dad has a single 470 from 1977 it runs great. Did alt conversion about 10 yrs ago. A couple of coils over the years and thats it. Those engines are light weight and have alot of torque.
think there are two solenoids one on the starter one external. Not sure where its located if I remember correctly mine was back by the starter and underneath exhaust manifold. looking from front to back of boat on left side. Hope it helps.

Does it have an external ignition coil? If so buy a new one. I would recommend an cheap automotive one probably $25.
