    Garmin 5212 Replacement/Upgrade

Backbone cables are used to extend the backbone where necessary, but when all of the components are close to each other, a backbone can simply be T's linked together and terminated on each end. There should only be 2 terminators per network. I encountered what I would call a power tap for the...

    410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread**

For some reason my memory on this is foggy too, and I have even less excuse because I've done it twice! I haven't removed my medicine cabinet. I think it was helpful to have the power panels swung open. @TheBobC, I've done this twice because I failed to plan for the future. In the run between...

    Engine Hatch?

Just to clarify, holding the rocker switch at the dash is easy. Reaching my hand down into an access hole in hopes of locating a cotter pin, pulling it, then lifting and propping-up a waterlogged hatch without dropping it onto my fingers is... I dunno, can I just change a Merc impeller...

    ActiveCaptain channel markers

Ah. Easy mistake, especially since Garmin *encourages* mapping purchases via app and their marketing team apparently likes to go home early. "We bought a cruising social network, let's call 5 of our products ActiveCaptain" "We bought a mapping company with an app that competes with ours -...

    Engine Hatch?

I misplaced mine before ever using it, but my '97 400DA came with one too, and I believe the manual for the 280BR suggests the same method. I just use shore power and the charger. I have to deal with this soon: the batteries in the 280 are beyond dead and the actuator isn't making a sound...

    ActiveCaptain channel markers

I'm not sure what you're saying. Garmin extends the license of whatever maps you own for your plotter for use in ActiveCaptain. What did you buy for $50?

Never been through a lock? Read on....

I was looking at your pic thinking, did he take a 48DA through the IW??? Wow! That was my first lock too. When I was a kid, we took our 36 Trojan Tri-Cabin though and I thought we were the biggest boat to ever do it. We tied to the wall at that log cabin lodge for lunch and there was a...

    Winterizing engines

Yep. On the hard, the path of least resistance is the underwater ports because of how the smaller side-discharge is routed. While floating, the lower part of tubes going to the underwater ports are full of seawater, so there's more resistance and exhaust gas and water will find the side discharge.

Keep head valve open while cruising

By installing a holding tank, you gain the option of choosing when to discharge waste. You could keep the valve closed until the you need to empty the tank in appropriate waters. I'd highly recommend it.

Keep head valve open while cruising

Sea Ray offers direct-discharge for models sold overseas. My U.S.-market 280BR has a pump-out porta-potty setup, but the discharge pump is simply a Vacuflush vacuum generator (one duckbill on each side of the pump). When the seacock is open underway, water never flows toward the head. In...

    410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread**

The margin of error of the fuel gauges is wider than the variables of fuel consumption (unless the vessel is actually on fire). Don't give this another thought until your next fill-up!

Boat I am buying needs a new VHF radio - fair price for a credit/replacement?

You can get a VHF radio with AIS reception (receive only) for a fairly small premium if you're already looking for mid-range VHF. (NMEA-2000 compatible etc) If you're only going to receive, you can get away with using only a VHF antenna. Your MFD will show nearby vessels. If you want to...

Boat I am buying needs a new VHF radio - fair price for a credit/replacement?

Hopefully you plan on getting a fixed-mount unit soon, but until then, there's a great solution to not hearing an analog ship-to-ship call on lord knows what channel on a portable with a small speaker and an awkward squelch adjustment: (the latter being one of my only complaints about the 890)...

Uneven fuel consumption Port vs Starboard

Valid yes, but a good practice? I’m not a fan of overloading engines or recommending that as a regular practice. One would have to assume the props are matched in pitch and condition AND that the tachs are spot-on. Those are big assumptions in many boats, particularly if they’re old enough...
