I thought I would share and close the loop on my broken starboard shaft. I took the shaft to a metallurgist for an inspection to help determine the cause of the breakage. The metallurgist discovered a stress crack at the beginning of the shaft taper at transmission coupling keyway due to fatigue...

Yes, my spare seal carrier was positioned forward of the dripless hose but was forced off the shaft after the shaft broke. The shaft remained about 9-10"" aft of the break point being held by the prop against the rudder. I could not access the shaft tube through hull area as dripless bellows was...

Thanks; it is looking that way. According to our parts manual Searay equipped the 44DB with stainless steel AQ22 shafts - so good quality on paper. I do not have confidence in the port shaft so I am replacing that one as well. I do not want to go through that nightmare again. Both shafts are...

Thanks. I was not aware alignment can change over time. I will have that check out. Than you, very helpful. This corroborates with what my repair facility stated. I sent a message to my Searay dealer and waiting on a response.

If it was improper alignment, it has been misaligned since new. I am the original owner and never had any issues with the shafts, dripless or cutlass bearings. I will know if it was misaligned when it is disassemble next week.

I inspect my dripless frequently but never noticed any cracks on the shaft. I guess you could perform a NDI dye penetrant test in that area. For peace of mind I am going to replace both shafts with A22 stainless. Just curious if this has happened to anyone else?

Broken prop shaft - Yesterday I had the unfortunate and unpredictable surreal experience of having a bilge full of rushing water due to a broken starboard prop shaft. Beautiful day on the Chesapeake Bay headed north at 20 knots, in 20 feet of water, no obstructions ahead, then bang, the boat...

Thank you for the response. This is good to hear. I did purchase the 27/60 Ultra as I felt my gross weight was between 32,000-34,000 lbs. I also purchased the Ultra swivel and sprung for the ring as insurance as well. I installed it last week and it does look beautiful. It is a nice piece of...

I ordered the Ultra 27/60 and it came in on Friday. I installed it yesterday and she is a beauty. Fits my bow roller perfectly. Thanks for your assistance/advice.

Ok, thanks. Yeah, I was thinking maybe the 46lb Ultra would suffice with more weight and wider flukes than the 35# Delta I am replacing. I just recalculated my gross weight and 27/60 is more appropriate. Did you also purchase the Ultra ring?

I found a new Ultra 27/60 on Ahoy Captain for $2,475 which retails at Ultra Marine West for $2,749 so some decent savings. I am ready to pull the trigger but I read on the 42/44 DB forum that an owner installed a 21/46 Ultra and was very happy with it. I am wondering if the 27/60 may be too much...

Hi Tenacious: Reading through the threads I came upon your post above regarding your Ultra anchor. I am interested in purchasing one and when I entered my information into the Ultra anchor selection chart (28,500 weight/44ft length) the results show using a 27kg/60lb Ultra size. I see you have a...

Just heard back from Lofrans regarding my Project 1000 windlass. The original max working load is 363 lbs (165kg) and expect a routine load of 260 lbs (118kg). They stated that I am good to go with the Ultra 27/60 anchor. Now to find the best price. Thanks for your comments.

Thanks again. All good stuff. Lofrans requested pics of my windlass, operating voltage, and chain info which I sent back this morning. Hopefully I will receive a quick answer. Where did you purchase your Ultra?

Thanks; all very helpful. I have been doing lots of research as well and watched several YouTube videos and evaluations. It comes down to the Ultra and the Vulcan. My concern was holding in the Chesapeake mud bottom and your review resolves that. I think I am sold on the Ultra. Before I pull...

This is great to hear, especially since you boat in the Chesapeake Bay. I have had too many sleepless nights when I drifted in winds above 20 kts with the standard plow anchor. BTW, did you also consider the Vulcan 20 as a suitable choice?

Thanks; does the Vulcan fit on your standard Searay bow rollers without any modification; just a simple swap out of the anchors?

I am considering a Ultra 27/60 as a replacement to the stock 35 lb plow anchor. Have you outfitted the Ultra 27/60 on your vessel? If so, was it compatible with your stock bow roller? Thanks.

Hi Mark: I am considering the purchase of a Vulcan 20 (44lb) for my 44DB. Did you have any compatibility issues with your anchor hardware configuration?
