Ran her up on the rocks - what does insurance cover?

So did you hire your own surveyor? If so, what did he say?

Hit some rocks in Boston Harbor

Yikes! Sorry to hear that you had this bad experience. I travel through that area only about once per year. I seem to recall that the channel is pretty well marked, but has high traffic and subject to some severe weather. Can you tell us more about what happened? How fast were you going? Was it...

Bow Thruster Charger Problems 2009 360SB

Or you leaned on the thruster too hard, causing the battery bank to become heavily discharged and causing it to try to draw too much current out of the charger - hence the blown fuse.

    Boat & Power selection question

Having made the leap from sail to power myself, I have a couple of observations. Like Frank W said, your perspective is from a sailing point of view, so here are some points to ponder: A powerboat loses a lot of interior space to the engine(s) and other machinery that most sailboats under 60'...

Red Bull over the Hudson River New York

I saw that in the LNM this week. Looks like very small anchorage areas depending on the size and type of boat.

Captain, would you STAY or GO with this forecast?

This forecast is crap. You are looking at the predicted wave height without the predicted wave period. If you look at buoy data on Wednesday afternoon - the wave height is 6.6 feet, but the period is 11 seconds. These are large swells, typical of this open water area. You will hardly notice...

    insurance quote need help

If you can get a survey that is acceptable to the insurer for $250, you are ahead of the game in year one (assuming there are no issues). Don'f forget that the $900 policy is $900 or more per year - every year. The cost of the survey and required repairs is a one-time deal. Of course, you...

Does scale on the zincs affect effectivness?

The 3 on the left look pretty normal for zincs that are ready or near ready to be changed. The fourth from the left is another story. It is normal for pencil zincs to thin out and then gradually erode from the tip to the plug base. The 4th from the left looks almost new, which could mean that...

    C120 fishfinder not working

Make sure that the correct transducer is selected in the DSM setup. Software updates with hard re-sets will change the MFD to the default transducer. If yours is different from the default, the sounder won't work. Even if you don't know the exact model number, there are only a handful of...

Around the boat I always use a "sea saw". -- sorry, couldn't resist.

    Reconfiguring my battery set-up

You should not put a new and an old battery in the same bank. There is no reason the deep cylce won't work as a starting battery, not ideal, but not worth replacing. Just replace the two in the house bank batteries with new deep cycles. You don't mention what size they are, but if they are...

Nantucket / Vineyard - Recommended Marinas

If you like being on a mooring, consider Edgartown instead of Oak Bluffs. It may be a bit late to reserve a mooring, but worth a shot. Edgartown is way nicer than Oak Bluffs in terms of shopping and restaurants.

    BLISTERS - ahhh, HELP!

It is unclear from your post but sounds like you bought this boat prior to having it surveyed. If this is not the case and this is a pre-purchase survey you have a lot more options - like walking away. Please clarify so that you can be appropriately advised or chastized.

    Recommendations on IR Cameras?

I have had good experience with the speco equivalent to the Raymarine CAM100. Just check the specs. to make sure that they are the same. Also, the Raymarine camera has both power and video running in the same cable. The Speco needs two cables.

    Sedan Bridge vs. Express Cruiser

    1. FYI, we can't spend more than 500k for it, that's our cap. As you are talking about "down the road" it's hard to judge what $500K will buy, but in today's market you would have a lot of choices. 2. Sea Ray or not Sea Ray, that is the question. While we like Sea Ray, and will keep our 280...

    Northeast Boating/Offshore Out of business

I have been getting both magazines for a number of years, so I was not surprised to see my usual Soundings in the mailbox. Then I read the inserted letter stating that my subscription to Soundings would be extended based on what I already paid for NE Boating. Looking at the address label on the...
