are you talking about the canister looking thing with the metal fuel line coming out the top? If so thats the Fuel Filter... but just a charcoal filter for trash not a water seperator...

how are you rolling it up? The old over the arm and elbow trick? If so thats why you're tangling it twists the rode up while rolling it in... if you will hold it in your hand and just slide out and arms lenth and hand it to the other hand and roll it in that fashion you wont have near the tangle...

One thing you may check into is the wiring harness that routes threw the top of the motor from front to back which has the temp sending wire in it... Make sure it's not touching the motor and melted... only reason i ask is I just had to repair 9 melted wires yesterday... it was causing my temp...
