Magma Grills

It's important that you get the Magma grills level or you get the "hot at one end" issue. I've found that if I get it level it cooks pretty evenly.

That can be tough on an anchored boat.

I am actually preferring an electric grill these day as I can use it on my boat at the dock. That's just not allowed for any of the propane grills. Unfortunately I have not been able to get enough feedback on the Magma Electric Marine to commit, the Kenyon does not have a adequate portable mount and the webers are a mounting project - so I have been muddling along with my George Foreman grill.

I do have a Magma - but unless I am rafting up I do not get to use it.

Anyone has experience with this gas George Foreman griddle?

If the gas Magma is any indication of how the brand in general performs then there are probably better options out there for electric grills.
I like the idea of the electric option too. It will come in handy at transient docks like Tobay and Sailor’s Haven so I can use it on the boat.
We had a small electric George Foreman that we haven’t used in years. I’m going to have to dig through everything in the basement to see if I can find it, then store it in the shed at my dock so it will be readily available when we are planning to go to a marina.
If I find that I use it enough I’ll go for a Weber Q series electric.
I learned my lesson with grills at home before finally going for a Weber 4 or 5 years ago.

my experience is a little different....we have a rectangular Magma grill mounted on a pedestal on the swim platform...it does a very good job for us....it will blow out but the wind has to be pretty strong....I have only had that happened once but the wind speed was high because a storm was blowing in....the heat is pretty evenly distributed on our grill with no real 'hot spots'....being stainless steel it won't rust and cleans up reasonably easily....

Old thread, I know, but..... Who cars about the grill? Where did you get that rail mount table?? :)

For me it was the mounting options. If you get the removable pedestal, you can mount the base under the swim ladder hatch making it completely stealth when not in use, and leaving your swim platform clear.

I keep threating to fix a SS plate over the too large gap in the back when the lid is down.
Too easy to blow out in a 10 knot wind. for now, I stuff aluminum foil in the gap to shrink the size. That works fine until you open the lid.
I think I want my plate to be "adjustable" so I can slide it up and down on the back of the grill. I'm sure MasterFab can turn it into a product in a second, and sell me one. ;-)

Do any of you have any concerns about an open flame near a common area for fuel tank vents?

If I put a grill on my platform or in a rod holder, the bottom of the grill could be as close as 12” to a vent.

I don't worry about it. Gasoline explosions come from vapors in an enclosed space at the right concentration. And tank vents are screened, which I believe would prevent any flame from going down in the vent tube. Now if my boat had gas that came out the vent, or bilge fumes, I might be worried. That said, many marina's do not allow BBQs to be used at all on the docks.

I would be MUCH more worried about using an alcohol stove top in the galley, but not because of gasoline fumes.

I don’t know it’s a reasonable concern or not. But I always placed my grill on the side opposite the fuel tank and vent. I’m a member of that tribe, too.

I use my Magma in the rod holder just behind the ER vents port side. I give it the sniff test before lighting up...

I had a brand new in the box Magma that came with my boat. After a few months of trying to get it to cook right, I went with an electric Traeger Ranger pellet grill. I did use the rod holder/pedestal from the Magma to attach to a commercial grade cutting board for the Trager to sit on. It cooks everything perfectly with digital settings and even a built in probe.

Ended up going to a Weber electric grill and couldn't be happier. Was not happy with the performance of the magma based on the price paid. Flare ups, blowouts you name it. One side of the grill was pretty much useless. I keep it around to take to the beach as you can grill 4 hotdogs at a time.

The bottom of the grill is the coolest surface.

I keep my magma mounted on a rod holder base and have used it on both sides of the boat. My fuel vent is port side well away from the grill location but I tend to avoid that side because of the vent.
