Canvas Sun Shade Extension Question

Thats really all I need. Where did you get that if you don’t mind me asking?

I purchased it second hand from another member on this site. Below is a pic of the info on the pole holder. Also, I ended up installing 15 degree rod holders as opposed to the typically 30 degree. The allowed the poles to stand more upright and increase head clearance.

I had a camper enclosure made 4 years ago. It included two side curtains, 3 piece rear curtain, bimini extension from the arch and support poles. It does not have screens. Fabric is Sunbrella. Cost was $1800.

Holy smokes this is a deal. I had this same work quoted for my 340 two years ago and the lowest quote was $4700. Others were higher. It would almost make sense for me to have a 340 hauled to Charlotte and back to save that much on canvas work! Sheesh....

Keep in mind that this did not include the windshield pieces or the small canvas shade and frame off the back on the arch.

Here is a photo.

Guys, after baking all weekend, I looked at this again and found a pretty cool website that makes custom stern shades and will sell just the heavy duty poles that go in your rod holders too. Check out www.ttopcovers.com and look under boat shade kit or ultimate boat shade kit. Pretty good looking options and in black...

I was looking at that site too. I don't think they could get it to me by July 8th when we leave. Too bad as it's really nice.

I have this sun shade and poles (from ttopcovers.com) for our 2009 310...bought it about 3 seasons ago. We don't even bother with the factory aft shade/hoop any longer. I attach the front edge of the sun shade to the arch using 3 sea suckers and the rear corners go to the aluminum poles in the rod holders. Fabric is stretchy and light and makes great shade. Not good for rain, nor running at high speed but we usually avoid both when we have the shade up.

Here's a (poor) picture of the shade:

Let me know if I can provide any info...

..
Are the straps necessary, I don’t recall those when watching ttopcovers’ video of the installation.

No, not really. I'd say their need is directly proportional to (a) the strength of your rod holders and (b) the amount of tension you place on them by stretching the fabric.

One benefit with the straps is that their eyelet goes over the shade eyelet on the top of the pole so if a sudden uplift of wind grabs the shade, it can't lift the corner from the pole. They are simply polyester straps with a loop sewn on one end and an eyelet on the other. There is a quick snap/slip connector in the middle to ease attachment/allow tension adjustment. On the 310/330, the cleat directly below the rod holders is ideally placed so I use them...

I called them for a quote on a 44DA and it was $1,400. I thought that was kinda steep, especially since they only came in black and we have blue canes.

When I purchased 3 years ago, the shade kit (poles, shade, straps, stow bag) was $650. My shade is 6’ x 5’.

Since we trailer our boat, the sun shade provides an easy/quick/effective shade solution without having to mess with the factory aft shade hoop (too high must come down for road transit each weekend trip). So it fills our need perfectly.

If it were stolen/lost tomorrow, I’d buy it all over again...

(I have no affiliation/relation with ttopcovers.com)

Mine would be twice that. They say the material is the most expensive. The sucker's are cheap and the poles are about $250 a pop.

Update: thanks again for all the ideas here as I used a lot of them to design and implement my own solution. Here’s what I ended up doing after the local canvas shop quoted me $3500. Another guy quoted me $2000 but he couldn’t get to it till August. We leave Sunday for our trip, so no bueno. Anyway I bought a 7.5 x 7.5 ft sail shade ($95)two Taylor made flag pole flush mounts ($60), and two boat hooks. ($60) for a grand total of $215CAD. I won’t be running with this, but it is perfect for what we needed. Thanks again for all the ideas gang!

Something like this? This utilizes the fishing rod holders and is 'stretchy.'

That looks great. I'm in the process of ordering a "sunscreen tarp" that has grommets installed every 18" and was trying to figure out how to get it to follow the natural curvature of the boat top. Never thought of having it sit on top of the boat top! I have the same fishing rod holders which will accept the but end of a boat hook in each for support.

By the way, the cost of a 10' x 6' finished sunscreen tarp is $37.

Thanks for the ideas!

Here is what I do. I have a beige triangle sun sail shade (bought from Home Depot online.). Wide side draped over the rear Bimini and tied to hand holds on the side window frame. The point extends back and I simply use my extendible boat hook as a temp pole. Sits on top of the transom with a single rope tiring it down to a swim platform grab bar. Looks decent and gives good shade. You could buy a square one and use two boat hooks in rod holders if you have them. I will try to find a picture of mine set up. It's not as "ghetto" as it sounds.

How much sun do you actually get moored next to that big a$$ Sedan? Kidding, I like the idea. I am having on made the same foot print as the solid fast back but I am making it out of a mesh similar to the sun shade on my Jeep

Yup ..I’ve got Perko rod holders too, but for whatever reason they’re set further up right by the step up on either side. Their positioning wouldn’t work for this and the flag mounts are a slightly smaller foot print.
