What make the Magma Grill so popular for use on the boat? Is there no flame exposed or that it's stainless steel? What.. I am looking at purchasing a grill for the boat but not sure which one is better suited for cooking on the boat.

Thanks
Barry

Probably both. I’ve got a round Magna that I’m unmpressed with. The lid gets very hot, it cooks unevenly, and it will blow out despite what they tell you.
It serves our purpose for now, but If I were to do it all over again I’d get a little Weber and figure out a way to mount it. Seems like lots of guys have done that.

my experience is a little different....we have a rectangular Magma grill mounted on a pedestal on the swim platform...it does a very good job for us....it will blow out but the wind has to be pretty strong....I have only had that happened once but the wind speed was high because a storm was blowing in....the heat is pretty evenly distributed on our grill with no real 'hot spots'....being stainless steel it won't rust and cleans up reasonably easily....

What makes it popular? All stainless steel. Compact. Runs on small bottle gas. Has a bazillion ways to mount on a boat readily available.

I’ve had a round one for a long time. Never had it blow out. Cooks pretty evenly. My only complaint is that it cooks pretty hot. Usually the low setting is just fine for burgers and dogs.

We have the round one and it does get very hot even on low, but you learn to be very attentive to whatever you are grilling... :)

I have a Kuuma grill. I wan't about to pay the absurd prices Magma charges.

So far I'm pleased with my purchase and use.

I had a Magma Newport and it was great. Never had an issue with "blow out" and like others here mentioned, there was a bunch of ways they could be mounted.

I can't see paying the premium for the Magma name. I bought stainless grill at Lowe's for short money (under $100). Made a bracket to mount it on a Magma pedestal on the swim platform. I couldn't be happier. I've been using it for the last 4 years with no problems. Not a great pic, but you get the idea.
It stows nicely in my dock box with the 10 lb. tank. I can still use the little 1 lb. tanks if needed.

We are on our 2nd rectangular one. Never had it blow out, but it does cook hotter on one end. Overall, it cooks too hot period. I have tried what they call their lower heat valve and it made no difference. I have the rod holder mount and it has a flat plate on top for the grill to mount to. I am going to find me another grill that I can mount on the Magma rod holder mount(flat plate) and see if I can come up with something better.

I have a magma rectangle one and it’s terrible. Blows out, drips grease out the ends. On the right side gets so hot it’s crazy and it will start grease fires. I’m going to try a sea b q brand next.

Just picked up a magma kettle, with all some spare parts, bag and extra mounts 100 bucks off Craig’s.. looks brand new.

We have a Kenyon grill that is installed in our cockpit. It grills most things pretty well but my (picky Argentine) husband says that it cannot cook a good steak. He wants us to bring our Magma grill on our upcoming trip to Canada but I think it's just another big thing to stow that we won't use often. I've been using this DeLonghi grill at home and I may just pack that along for our summer trip. It's not cheap but it works great and even pleases my picky husband!

Bonus - it has griddle attachments and opens flat to give you two grilling surfaces. Yes it requires AC power but for the short time it takes to heat and grill some steaks, it's worth it to me to fire up the generator.

We have the Newport as well... What makes it popular is the mounting poll and base (which fits under my ladder hatch). Everything in boating is expensive, especially the good stuff... If we all applied logic to boating, we would all sell our boats... Another reason why it is so popular, may be how Magama is spelled MAGA-MA... Everyone loves MA (Mamma not Mass) and you all know what the part stands for... :)

Just going to throw this out there. My wife cooked burgers on the stove. We fired up the generator, pan fried the burgers in butter, and they were amazing. Not an option for the non-cruisers, but didn’t have to mess around with a grill, cleanup was easy, etc. she even grilled the buns on the stove.

I found a Weber Q1200 for $100. It grills hot and not hot. It has only blown out in a tropical storm (37kts). Easily mounted with a grillamount. Table I mounted to can double as drink/ party table. Is easily cleaned, as it has disposable drip pans.

It also folds up pretty small and fits in my transom hatch so I have nothing permanently mounted on the floor to stub toes on, clutter up the rail or cramp the swim platform.

Where did you find one for $100.00? That’s a great deal!

Craig’s list. New in the box. I was assured it wasn’t hot
