Going for swim ..... anyone?

2-3 miles for a quick dip? Just do it.

Anytime your in ocean water your never very far away from sea life.

Guess we don’t have many scuba divers on here..?

Boaters afraid of the water...surprises me.

Jump in, you’ll be fine.

Jump in, swim and enjoy!
I have the boat bottom cleaned every three weeks and we like to do that off shore. I usually get in and inspect the running gear while the bottom is being cleaned. It is not unusual to see various species of shark and barracuda; they are awesome animals to be around BTW. I do a lot of spear fishing and lobstering both scuba and free diving; it would be unusual to not see shark or the other A predators. There were only two instances where large bull shark were interested in me (well, my bag of lobster in one instance and a large grouper on the spear in the other instance) and I had to wedge the bag on the bottom and come back later to retrieve and let the shark have the grouper in the other. Message is they are there and they are not interested in you. 20+ years enjoying the ocean and counting...…
A picture I took in Palau a couple of years ago very cool!

I do triathlons and love open water. If I am unsure of water conditions I will swim with a swim buoy. Just goes around my waist and floats behind me. Go swim. My friend swims triathlon and her husband just motors nearby.

Wow.
Want my candid opinion?

Go swim. People do it all the damn time.

You run the risk of getting shot at the Grocery store, run over by a car in the street, or walking on the sidewalk, catching a rock to the head from a lawn mower. Do you consider all of the dangers every time you go out in public? I'll bet not. I don't wear a helmet to check the mail, and I don't wear my gear every time I go outside. I'm taking a calculated risk.
If I ride a motorcycle I wear my gear. Helmet, boots, gloves, at a minimum. abrasive resistant clothing if called for.
I understand the dangers involved.

I have a boat.
I'm out on the water all day. I'm surrounded by stuff that I cannot breathe, cannot walk on, filled with creatures that don't like me, on a vessel that just seems to want to break, or not start at any given moment.
I'm surrounded by people.
People who are having fun.
They are also not paying full attention.
They are watching their kids, or that Bikini, or their depth gauge.
Of all these things, I am aware.

I have Life vests/jackets, a Throwable PFD, rope, flares, fire extinguishers, radio, phone, First Aid Kit, tools, spare parts, all the jazz required, plus.

Will ANY of that stop an accident from happening?
NOPE. NOT AT ALL.
All of that stuff is just like the cops.
Good to have around, but not much help until something happens.

Worth the risk? Abso-freaking-lutely.
Life is short. It is full of anxiety, stress, risk, failure, pain, sadness, illness, intense joy, love, happiness, fun, laughter, and excitement.
Experience it all.
Nothing better than some time/beer shared with someone who has done things, seen things, and experienced life. The stories and experiences are what make us what and who we are.

Go My Dude, Swim off your damn boat.
Frolic Naked in the Sea, Then live to tell the tale.
My point?
Don't get dead of something stupid, and don't cause your loved ones undue pain.
Nobody wants to be remembered that way.
But don't let anything but your own decisions keep you from doing what makes you happy.

Okay. I'm done.

Nicely said and Perfect. Hats off to you!

I'm trying to recall ever seeing anyone do what you're proposing and can't. Like another post said, if you need to get it out of your system, go for it.

Life is to short. With all the good suggestions made, your risk is lessened. GOOD LUCK WITH IT!

Happens all the time in the Great Lakes. Even during big sail boat races if you're becalmed in hot weather. Not an everyday occurrence, but then again not unusual. Long line deployed and ladder down. Before we had a decent shower, this was the way we took baths.

"Put the longest line you have on a stern cleat.
Wear a life vest, Keep the line in your hand."

I don't get the issue, we do this all the time!
...and I'll add; Have your wife put the motor in gear and tow you at about 4-5 knots.....:D

Trolling anyone?:p

Just swim!

I find there's a certain thrill to swimming out in the open ocean. Up here in New England...the water gets much clearer as you get well offshore, (tends to be murkier closer to shore).

Just be aware of possibility of current.

Re: the post above with the Goliath Grouper...yeah I'd imagine those can make your heart pound when you see them.

Way too much adventure and beauty not to drop in the ocean and look at what 3/4 of the earth is really like. We Floridians swim, dive, shoot, and live off of the ocean's harvest every day. Like my man T. Mott, I have seen and encountered predators but they were stopping by just to see what I was pulling up from the bottom.
When asked about the hazards, I just reply that if a shark comes after me, I can, and will outswim it.....I know I can swim through clean water faster than a shark can swim through feces and if he is following me, he will have to navigate through a bunch of it!!!!

Be safe....which starts with being smart!

Jeez some people are awful cautious. Just got back from 15 days in the keys and water is what you do. You swim in it, snorkel in it, and dive in it. Then you throw chum off the back of the boat and try to catch things that might eat you on purpose. Go for your swim.

My Dad used to work in the woods. When I was little I asked 'aren't you afraid of the bears'. He said he'd leave them such a slippery trail they'd never be able to catch him.

An old saying that can apply to about any shark, bear, lion etc -- "I don't have to outrun that xxx I just have to outrun you".
