Be aware also that a distress using MMSI/DSC is limited to the range of the VHF; I'm not saying that is a bad thing but is a limitation. If you are really concerned about response then step up to an EPIRB; I both an EPIRB and PLB on the boat.

In the Great Lakes, most boaters are unlikey to be out of VHF range, at least for very long.

It’s not impossible though, which is one of the reasons I’m trying to raise awareness. There’s a lot of shipping traffic to hear calls, but way too few pleasureboaters even keep their radios ON.

Exactly. The CCG isn't going to lookup the MMSI number to determine if they will respond to a distress call. If they receive a DSC Distress Call they will respond.

The MMSI# will be sorted out later.
I didn't see any reason to take the risk by not following protocol. I applied for the license online and received my MMSI number two days later.

I would not worry about it. I registered and have mmsi numbers. Recreational users of vhf are not required to be licenced. You are required to be trained on the proper use though.

I wish there was a way for the CG to remotely detonate a mic that is stuck and broadcasting on 16 locking up the channel.
