Sounder- Transducer Installation

I would recommend also to seal the edge of the fiberglass with epoxy resin before installing the new transducer.

I wondered about that also. I have a very experienced yard here do my hole drilling and they seal up the hole with epoxy (at a minimum) even on solid glass places. I noticed in the BOE video that there was a core there and it was not sealed other than the 4200. The yard here explained that you can still get water wicking up the fiberglass strands causing issues... core or no core... On larger holes, they reglass the opening edge.

Gary, its very similar to concrete restoration work I've had in several projects. Where I've had concrete spall and expose the solid bar reinforcing steel I can specify that the contractor expose the rebar to sound metal and attach new to that portion. But I've had projects where a tensioned cable provided the reinforcing and we never are able to find a good attachment point because the moisture wicks so far down the cable, causing it to rot out almost the entire length. At that point we're usually pretty close to structural failure.

I agree with that. It could lead to de-lamination. In a perfect world it shouldn't matter since it should be sealed properly... but.....

If you decide to use the transom mount transducer just be aware twin engines can make placement a bit tricky. I decided to use the transom mount since I wanted the water temp function and well - it came with the unit so meant I didn't have to buy anything else! It does occasionally lose the bottom but I was able to play with the angle of the transducer and it now holds very well. I don't lose the readings at speed and this is with a fairly inexpensive Hummingbird unit. I was able to place mine on the port side since it didn't have any intakes or other items under the boat to disrupt the water flow and create turbulence or bubbles.

This post is perfect for me as well. I bought a Raymarine A70D chartplotter/fish finder at the Miami boat show. I am hauling out on Friday for bottom paint, etc, but also plan on installing the transducer. I got a B60 bronze through hull with a 20 degree tilt. When I got the transducer, the arrows on it point to the bow and the keel, meaning it is supposed to be mounted on the strb side of the hull. I need to install it on the port side. Does anyone know if it will be ok if I just turn it 180 degrees and mount it on the port side <bow arrow now pointing to the stern>? I've EM Airmark, but they have not responded.

LMBoat,
What did you pay for your B60-20deg? I'm looking to get one as well.

Reg $269, boat show price $198....and it's bronze

Yeah, that's a good price. I took advantage of handheld VHF radio, but totally forgot to inquire RM about the transducer.

Im planning on putting on a Garmin transducer. What do I need to fill the screw hols with to avoid leakage in the core of the boat?

Mark, best practice is to first oversize your holes... fill with epoxy or polyester resin, then redrill your pilot hole through the epoxy a d seal with a good sealant such as the Boatlife products. Most, however, will skip the epoxy steps, which still fine. Did you read the destructions? What did they say?
