I'm looking to replace the v-berth mattress on a 340DA. I see people buy a memory foam mattress and cut it to fit. What size do I need to buy to fit the width? TIA

Well, my 290 took a full, so yours must be Queen. Buy a good one. I tried to cheap out last one and it wasn't a pretty picture..

I personally hate memory foam. It seems so dead to me. I started out adding a 3” regular latex FOAM mattress as a topper. It wasn’t all that... I then flipped the mattress and the topper. I am a happy man

When I wanted a new mattress for my old '89 340 I bought Ikea's best latex foam mattress and cut it to fit.

You'll need a king for your 340. I replaced mine with 6" foam last year. I had a post on it somewhere around here (quick search?). I found a decent quality foam mattress for just over 100 buckeroos and cut it with a $20 turkey knife. A great upgrade...especially considering a "real mattress" will run you closer to a full boat buck.

Latex all the way for us. Memory foam feels dead IMO. Talaylay or Dunlop latex is natural, from tree sap.

I agree...you will need a king size mattress.....I used a 4" memory foam that had a 4 lb. density rating.....I am 6' - 1" tall.....the 4" memory pad on top of the regular bed pad allows me to sit up while I am on the bed and not hit my head on the deck but just barely.....a 6" pad would have been too thick and I would hit my head.....

best mod we have done to our boat by far....the V-berth bed is now very comfortable....

I too am 6'1"....and I negotiate getting out of bed with some level of caution. :)

We just did this ...bought a King size 6 inch memory foam mattress off Amazon for $300. The mattress on our 340 at it's widest point is 81" which is much wider than a queen, and one inch wider than a king. Regardless, it works. we used the existing mattress as a pattern and drew an outline on the new one with a sharpie. Used an electric kitchen knife (suggestions from another thread here) to cut it. It worked perfectly and the bed is SO much more comfortable now. I think it's better than my bed at home even.

Are you using just the new 6" mattress or are you using it with the old mattress as a base?

Currently we're using the 6 inch alone, though admittedly it's a bit firm (although much less firm than the factory mattress on it's own). We like a bit of a firm bed though. I did try it with the factory mattress as a layer, and it was also very nice. Very plush.

Did you get one with any of the gel layers? All I see on amazon has some gel or other "comfort" layers, just wondering how well those cut vs just foam?

Sorry ..my wife reminded me we got it from Wayfair which is a Canadian online home store up here. Ours didn't have the gel ..this was the one we purchased in King:

There was another member on here in the US who mentioned they had done the same thing with an 8 inch memory foam mattress from Wal-Mart. That's where I got the idea. There are options for 6 or 8 inch at Walmart.com ..all for under $300

Memory is dead? I don't know..I have a 3" serta on my mattress and I sleep like a baby. I don't want to go home sometimes. Have to buy a King. I took my mattress out, laid it on top, traced it with a marker and cut it out with an electric knife..worked great

Do you put any kind of cover on the foam to seal it up or just the sheets?
