This should be a simple process, but I'm afraid to take out the existing plastic screws because I can't fit my hand between the toilet and the wall behind it, and thus the plastic nuts will simply fall and I will be unable to put them back on the screws after I swap the seat. This seems ridiculously silly. Am I missing something? Do I have to remove the entire toilet?

I replaced mine last year, and I don't recall needing to get between the back wall and the head. I believe that I did it by reaching around the sides and getting to them. I think that I had to use a box wrench to hold the nut when removing and reinstalling. I'm not that big of a guy, though. Ask the wife, or a smaller friend for help? As a last resort, removing the head is not that difficult. Just remove a couple of screws. Nothing comes out the bottom so it can be slid forward easily.

The plastic bolts are easy to remove, but there is no access to the nuts underneath them - either from the side or from the back.

Just a follow-up for those that may encounter this problem. I was able to solve this by using anchor bolts with flat washers - easy and solid!
