Good Boating Dog?

Why do you say that  ???

It's not the dog... it's the *name*. I just can't imagine going to the office and talking about my doodle.... Should have called it a "Poolden" or something...

Geez when ya package me up that way...:wow:

I just dont find dogs very exciting, and mostly just annoying creatures. Too slobbery and crap all over the yard. I just LOVE hearing a dog bark at 9 pm.

The constitution is one of the most important documents in history, but it has seen better days. Gave us a great framework for government, but it has been bastardized. As well, there was no way they could imagine what our nation would become, and our place in the world. Nor was any technology considered.

I have grown to enjoy boating more lately solely because of how my kids have enjoyed it. So I think I am taking it more than leaving it now:smt001

I've had a few Boxers over the years - very good with family and very protective of children. Tigger makes a great boating dog - usually curls up and goes to sleep unless food is available - then he's wide awake and pretending he's starving. Here he is at Thanksgiving when he was only about 7 months old - he's filled out to be a bulky 82lbs now!

Before you buy/get any dog, I encourage you, in fact I beg you, watch every episode of The Dog Whisperer. It's not the dog with the issues/problems, it's the owner. We apply his logic/training to ours (well our one now) and it works perfect.

My folks have 2 yappy pomeranians, so yappy we hate to go visit them. You blink and they bark at you, you twitch and they bark at you....

My folks recently stayed at our house, with their dogs, for a week or so. By the time they left the dogs were as quite as can be as we applied the dog whisperers training with them. Guess what? My mom applied the training for about another week and then gave up as it "was too much work" so back to the yappy dogs.

I've never heard of a Doberman mauling a child before, they tend to be very protective of their owners, but not the type you hear about from the drive by media. Our neighbor had a pincher, and although it couldn't swim worth a damn, it was a great dog, and loved to play with our GSD.

I think Gary might have hit it on the head this time:thumbsup:

About dobermans or diesel guys on CSR?

poodles are smart? I guess the large breed ones are, but the small ones are only good for kicking through the uprights for halftime entertainment at the local football game. IMHO of course.

Actually yes the standard poodle is very smart and highly trainable. We got our boxer from the Pilot Dog School that trains seeing eye dogs for placement with the blind nationaly. They use German Shephards, Boxers, Standard Poodles, Labs, and Golden Retrievers. Our Boxer "flunked" out of the program but she came to us 1 1/2 years old, fully obedient trained, house broken and highly wired to learn..

as for the Dobermins, it's not the breed, it's the training and the owners that cause the problems. There are thousands of Pits, Dobermins and Rots that are perfectly docile loving animals until they meet the Micheal Vics of the world

Someone had to pull the Mike Vic card out! Just messing with ya.

I agree 100%. Some dogs are pre-disposed to be aggressive, like Dobermans (use to have one), Pits, Rotties and the like. But it's my opinion you can make them a lovable, warm, social and friendly dog.

My first dog was an Akita. I got him when I was 30. Everyone warned me about their aggressivness, especially since he was a male. Yeah, he was aggressive, especially towards "non pack" dogs and "non pack" humans. But once he knew you he became your best friend and was just a big lap dog. He was loyal, loving, protective (I was never concerned about the Mrs when she was home alone with him in the house) and just a big baby at heart. Once he knew we liked and trusted you he would lick you to death.

We took him out on the boat a few times. I knew he did not like it but he wanted to be with us. He was too big for the boat really at 85+lbs. He hated the water, but loved the girls and the attention from the girls. He was a big flirt.

I miss the heck out of him. He passed away from cancer last year.

Can't argue with that! Most combinations with poodle are a bit lame...Cockapoo????

We're down to 1 dog now, since one of our goldens and our newfie died in the last few months. When we had 3 dogs there was no way to take all or any boating. We had to leave all behind or there was bedlam, and there was no way 3 big dogs would fit on the 250.

Now with just one remaining, a 12-year-old golden female, we're going to make her a 'boat dog'. She's already excited about it....

How do you folks get your dog out of the water and back onto the boat?

How about from the dock to the boat, and vice versa? I'm not sure ours will be able to jump the distance.

Thank you for all of the replies!

Your dogs are all very cool! I grew up with a lab, and she was a boat dog! My wife is not interested in the shedding of a lab though...
I really appreciate the responses, and the pics. I promise, this will be an EDUCATED decision, we've been looking for 3 years, which come to think of it was 3 boats ago!

Sorry to hear about your loss. We had 4 dogs, lost 3 recently, down to 1 now like you.

Like you it was a challenge to boat with all 4 so we left them at home or just brought one.

We have a floating slip. I keep the swim platform very close to the dock so the little Wiggs can jump on. She pretty much comes and goes as she pleases at the marina, we just keep an eye on her.

Out on the water she needs a little persuasion to jump in. We bought her a doggie life jacket and used it for a while In fact, the handle on the jacket makes it real easy to scoop her out of the water. She is getting better and will now swim to shore to go do her business and, with a little coaxing she will get in the water and swim back to the boat. Keep in mind we back up to the shore in 5-6 feet of water and it's calm. Though sometimes she just sits on shore and stares at us so I have to go get her.

When I set out to find a dog, I knew I wanted a lab, but not the size (apt). I finally found a litter of rescue pups (farmer was going to drown them and a lady rescued them) They were a Lab/Beagle mix. Size of a beagle but looks like a golden lab. She loves the water.

downside- sheds like a lab. nose of a beagle. she can find anything dead within a mile and retrieve it for you.

My buddy Gus the Giant Schnauzer. Likes the boat, likes to be anywhere we are. He's not sure about the water. Never have to lock the cabin door when he's onboard. He always keeps an eye on the little ones.

Geez Man....

I guess one has to ask, "What do you like?" Baseball? Football? How about women? Ya gotta like women? 4th of July? Christmas? Or is that like boating? Just for the kids? The elderly? Cats? Please don't tell me you like cats.

As for the politics, I see your point. There's probably someplace better to live than the crappy ol' USA. Like maybe Iran, or France, maybe SE Asia. Anyplace would have to be better than here, right?

Thanks for sucking us into your black hole. I do however, defend your right to express your opinion.

Some dogs like to ride on a boat, and some don't. This is more likjely to be the personality of the individual dog, rather than a breed characteristic. Some dogs just don't like a be on a platform that is moving underneath them. Most likely a dog that enjoys a car ride will enjoy a boat ride. We have two 'found hounds', one a great boat dog and one not. The boat dog seems to be a cross between a whippet and a terrier; she loves to run and play when on land, loves to ride in a car or in our Dancer's cockpit.

If your worried about the shedding, get yourself a dyson vacuum..works great. We use it every day or two and people are amazed that we have a lab and there is no hair in the house. We started Bailey out on the boat when she was a puppy and she has loved the boat and water ever since. She starts dancing around as soon as we start getting the boat bag ready. Here are some pics from a few years ago out on my first boat...(sea ray jet boat)....

Baseball is a snoozefest, football is better played on a chessboard, I LOVE women (though only 1 has my heart) 4th of July is one of the better holidays, xmas is great without the religious aspect, boating has grown on me, I have no thoughts on the elderly, I do like cats (yes, I do, they are independent and not wishy washy).

I like a lot of things never discussed here, no one has brought up ice hockey or golf, snowboarding and skiing, snowmobiling, I love my beer, love the winter as much or more than summer, home remodeling, etc...

We DO Live in the best place in the world...for now. Blind acceptance of this fact without looking at how the rest of the world is beginning to view us does not bode well for the future if we just keep on telling ourselves "we live in the best place in the world". I speak to and have friends and family all over the world from Europe to Africa to Australia. Understanding how they see us may give you a bit of a shock.

If we continue just boasting about how wonderful we are without the actions that support this, there WILL BE many many other places to live better than here.

We have a Golden Retriever. He's a good boat dog. Yes, he sheds... That's why there are vacuum cleaners.

The only non shedding dog that I am aware of is the poodle. They are supposed to be good for people with dog allergies, also.

Good luck on your quest for a pooch!

If you get a dog, don't forget to put sunscreen on their nose when you're out on the water. They will sunburn.

I second the sunscreen advice from Water Rat....very good point, especially for lighter pigmented dogs. Just be careful as our vet told us that some human sunscreens can be dangerous to dogs if ingested and of course the first thing they do is try to lick it off their nose. We picked up some dog sunscreen at petsmart that is safe if they ingest it for $5 or so.

Check out the Basenji. It's a smaller dog, short hair, doesn't blow its coat, doesn't bark(they make yodelling sounds), very clean and good watch dog. My Aunt had one, it was an excellent companion.
