Hello I have a 80's Model Sundancer 245 and was in the process of trying to get it started after its been dormant for years. I had a mechanic come attempt to fire it up and upon his inspection he recommends new points and distributor cap. Furthermore he told me that I should just upgrade to a HEI distributor. For those that have replaced the points with HEI distributor. Which one did you go with?

My engine serial states that my motor is a 98' and newer Mercruiser 5.0L

Thanks

You can get a drip in electronic conversion kit. It fits in your existing distributor, it replaces the points and condenser. It is a whole new plate that is held in with a few screws, very easy job. Google Pertronics kits and see what comes up. I put a lot in my last boat and no more fiddling with points and gap and dwell, etc. Cheaper than a new distributor and no need to mess with the timing.

Agreed.

I did both of mine in my last boat and it was the best $120 I’ve ever spent, but as I remember it was suggested to advance the timing 2 degrees.

Boy the days of points. I loved doing points back then. It made such a huge difference when the are gabbed correctly, then advance the dist by 2D and you would have a completely new boat. She would burn warmer, but it would scream.

Great advice! I’ve had a Petronix hidden under the stock looking cap in my 68 GTO for many years.

Thanks for the info! Much appreciated...So I'm trying to order the right pertronix kit and the only identification number i could find was on my distributor plate, the number 25608 is listed. I didn't see any other identifiers on the distributor housing. Can anyone confirm if the PerTronix MC-181 Ignitor Mercury Marine 8 cy is the correct unit I need for this distributor. Thanks
