5.7 liter EFI Mercruiser with BRAVO 3 mercruiser outdrive
Hello all. I have a 1999 215 express cruiser with a 5.7 efi mercruiser/chevrolet with a bravo 3 dual prop set up. I bought this bought a little over a year ago. The first time I took it out, I filled up the tank and nozzle didn't shut off and spilled fuel. 1. Is this normal? 2. When I first started to take off and get up on plane it ran bad/ruff until I got down to about 3/4 tank then ran great.
Next time I took it out same thing.
What gives? Thanks for the help.

Pretty much all boats this size (and some larger, as well) will not auto shut off. Listen for the gurgle.

Only two times out? Check fuel quality?

Which engine do you actually have? Unless it's been repowered, it would not be an MPI in '99.

EFI. Yes only 2 times out. Life happens.
No gurgle either. Runs bad until down to around 3/4 tank.

Don't know about your second point, but yes it is common for the nozzle to not shut off and spill gas. This can be for various reasons, bad nozzle, bad routing of your fill hose inside the boat, the tank vent not sized sufficiently large to handle the rate you're putting the gas in. There are perhaps other reasons, too.

Depending on where you are, spilled fuel in the water can cost you a lot. Other places are pretty matter of fact about it.

You're perhaps on a trailer and fill up at the gas station where people are unlikely to notice a bit of spilled fuel.

We fill our boat at the fuel dock and I am always fearful of spills. I have an absorbent sock around the nozzle and some handy dish detergent (a no-no, of course). I recently had a vent whistle installed on each tank and that's been able to warn me when getting close to full. The noise of the whistle is annoying but better than spilt fuel IMO. Vent whistle described in this article.

There's definitely a gurgle. Just have to listen closer. There's nothing wrong - it's just a simple function of the way the fuel tanks/fill hose/vents are in small boats. I have one of those whistles in my Grady - it always gets funny looks, but it does make it easier!

Fuel quality?

Also, last time filter was changed?

Follow your vent line - make sure there are no dips.

Next time out, if it does the same thing, open the fuel fill and see if gets better.

Thanks. I fuel on land and let attendant know if I spill. I have looked and can't find a fuel vent anywhere. I have been boating over 40 years. I'm just having a couple strange problems.

Fuel vent is built into your fuel fill. But if you follow the vent line, it should be obvious.

Thanks. Great point with cap. I am thinking of just taking it with 3/4 tank and see what she does.

I would like to put a whistle on it. I have had them on other boats. Does this boat vent back to the fuel filler?

Thank you very much. Would that cause it to run bad also? Vapor lock type of thing?
