I have a sundancer 290 2000.
I noticed I had oil in the keelson, then I noticed that it was from the drive oil container. I have pressure in the oil. Anyone know something about this?

i just replaced my bottle which was had sensor broken on bottom... but after the run this weekend i too see lube oil in bilge.. have not investigated yet but appears to be a heat/pressure issue?

interested to hear others responses...

I'm afraid of the drive taking in water and pushing it in the container. I'll try more this weekend. Thank you for the engageman.

would think this would lead to milky lube? but let us know...

obviously when oil heats it expands...

  • The cap on the gear lube monitor bottle has a gasket, make sure that has not fallen out, cap will leak if it is missing.
  • Don't overfill the bottle, as others have said the gear lube heats up and expands. I never add to mine unless it has dropped close to the fill line.
  • The connector that passes the gear lube hose through the transom has a quick disconnect on it, make sure nothing is leaking there. Be gentle with it, you break that thing and you will spend several hours of hell replacing a little $20 part.
  • If you had water getting in the gear lube would turn milky eventually. The quickest way to tell for sure is to pull the drain plug on the outdrive and see if water comes out - of course have to have the boat out the water for that.
  • Another possibility is the front seals leaking on the outdrive and filling the bellows with gear lube - doubt that is what is going one because you would be loosing a lot of gear lube at that point.
Start with the easy stuff, cap > bottle > hose.

Thanks for all the tips, I'll take it to me.
I have just put in a new engine where this drive is mounted. One thought is that there has been air in the hose or drive.
I would like to take the easier options with a hose, lid or container, but I'm afraid it's more serious. So I'm going to test this weekend so I'll be back.
