Can you replace a bravo 3 impeller while the boat is in the water

First 2 places to look after ruling out the impeller, intake side of the heat exchanger, then intake hose coming from the drive through the transom. (Bravoitis) There is no strainer when water comes into the pump from the drive as is on inboards with thru hulls. Everything that gets sucked in gets trapped in the little holes that go through the exchanger. Take end cap off and inspect. If clogged up with little pieces of sea crap, will need to be cleaned. It is an easy do it yourself, just takes time. To help with diagnoses, first take boat out and record water pressures @ idle, 1200 and 3200 rpms. This will point to where the issue is - before the pump or after.

How did the housing look? Don't dismiss it - the tiniest of scratches can do it - if you can feel the scratches with your fingernail, it's too deep. What are your overheating issues... idle... load... speed... etc?
Turned out to be a bad water pressure sensor. Easy to replace.

Are you sure you had an overheating problem to begin with? Meaning, the water pressure sensor, itself, can not cause/not cause an overheat issue. It's only monitoring pressure. It can cause an alarm (which can be read differently than an overheat), but it won't cause the engine to overheat.

Checked the guages and veselview. No overheating. Turned out to be a bad water pressure sensor!

I haven't done this, but a fellow boater did his in the water one year and it worked out ok. So the next time he had the boat pulled, closest marina is 90 minutes away, he put in line brass gates in the line. Now he does it in the water without a hitch. Just turns the valve off, does the change over and turns the valve on. Works great.

I hope your use of the word "brass" was a slip of the tongue. Your friend should have used bronze because brass will actually rot out. The use of brass is components for raw water plumbing is about as unsafe as it gets. That said it is not the popcorn producer like the Honda generator threads.

Tony,

Do you have through hull raw water pickups? The plumbing through the BIII drive is really so poor that even a perfect pump can't pull enough water. We installed one the second or third year we had Bella and 16 years later have not had any temp problems.

Yes, I get it that you replaced a bad sensor and you aren't having any overheat problems at this time. But you had previously said you WERE having overheat issues. As I mentioned above, the sensor has no impact on overheating in any way. What else changed? Or did you misdiagnose an overheating issue?

Guys, I miss diagnosed the overheat issue. I was solely relying on what the vesselview error (s) said and panicked.

Day 2: Immediately replaced the raw water impeller. Still getting overtemp error message on vesselview screen.
One member suggested looking at the propulsion screen on the vesselview and comparing the 2 engines. SO i did. The temps and pressures were fine on both engines and the vesselview was still indicating an overtemp problem.

On test day 3, I took the boat out again to try and diagnose. 3 errors came up on the vesselview. 1) overtemp, 2) going into guardian mode, and 3) Water Pressure sensor malfunction.

I wish I just got the malfunction error in the first place! Been running the boat 2 days now since I changed the sensor. Running great!

Hi Henry,
Good to hear from you. My error in diagnosing the problem. Posted full report above #28. Have a great boating season!
