As the snow from the last Nor'easter is still melting in my yard, my thoughts turn to warmer weather and the upcoming boating season.

The Jones Beach Memorial Day Air Show is once again fast approaching. The Blue Angels will be taking their turn as headliners for the show (they alternate with the Air Force Thunderbirds). So far, we have several boats planning to spend the weekend in Zach's Bay, for what has become an annual ritual. Anyone interested in joining in on the festivities?

I might join everyone this time..... When does everyone usually go... Friday into Saturday or Saturday into Sunday? Never seen the show before.... Do they fly right overhead, Do you hear them?

Sounds great. I, and a few other boats, try to arrive Friday evening and stay straight through Monday. Some of the boats that are traveling from New Jersey or Connecticut arrive Saturday morning, after spending the night on the hook at an anchorage near the Statute of Liberty (Southern end of Liberty State Park that I believe has a boat ramp).

It is a great show! The Blue Angels can get directly over our heads on some of the turns, almost to the point that you can see the pilot in the cockpit.

As you can imagine, that close they can get load.

In answer to the other questions, yes, they do close Zach's Bay during the show.

They have also in the past imposed a no wake zone between the Meadowbrook and Wantagh Bridges after several hours after the show (I am pretty sure they did this after the airshow and also after the 4th of July fireworks).

Some shows, we have had a few boats rafted up for the weekend:

It would be great to get a big raftup going for the weekend, so let me know and we can start planning it out.

harold, as much as we've loved the show in the past years i think were going up the Hudson River this time. i'd be surprised if that changed. but ENJOY THE WEEKEND

You will be missed! Enjoy your trip. We will make plans to meet up sometime this season.

We usually go every year and raft up with a couple of friends and hope to do it again this year.
Look for us.
We don’t stay overnight because of other commitments on Memorial Day weekend, opting instead to arrive before 9:00 AM before it gets crowded and staying until 5:00-6:00 after the rush leaves.

I'll keep an eye out for you. If you see us, give us a shout. We usually keep channel 68 on the VHF on. We should have me, Zuzu's Petals II, and at least three other CSR members rafted together, Vice Aversa, Paisley's Playpen and Knot for Sail.

Let the countdown begin! 10 days to go!

Your going?? Well then I’m not going.... Well probably not... Well maybe...
