Does anyone have a pdf maintenance manual for this transmission, or know where I can get either a pdf or hard copy?

Thanks. Looking to change fluid and filters and want to see illustrations for draining, capacities, and part number for filters.
This should help.

That is the one I looked at as well. I believe you can clean the filters with mineral spirits letting them dry overnight before installing them. But if you find a place that has them let me know. Also if you have an extractor recommendation I would appreciate it!! Any of the manual hand pump ones better then any other?

Looks like the current ZF part number for the filter kit is 463772. If you google it you’ll come up with a couple of places that sell the kit. Including filter and O rings for about $40.00 each.
I think you can clean them with mineral spirits, but I don’t want to take them out and find the O rings or filters need replacing and then not be able to get them locally so I’ll probably order two just to be safe.
The 12 volt pump I use is a Jabsco 17850-1012. I’ve had it for several years and it works really well. They sell a cheaper one that I had first, but the pump crapped out after just a couple of years and it couldn’t be repaired.

Update:
So I did the transmission fluids and filters a few weeks ago.
I called ZF Hurth for the part number for the filters before ordering them. They told me the filters are not cleanable, and there is no separate part numbers for just the O rings.
They told me that any brand name Dexron III is okay to use. Most of the brand names listed in their manual are European versions and would be hard to find in the US.
I had much better luck pulling the ATF out of the filter hole once I removed it than the dipstick hole.
Once the pump pulled out the ATF I removed the drain plugs to get the last of it out.
I used a small disposable aluminum foil roasting pan from the dollar store to capture what came out because it was easy to bend to get in to place. Not much more came out so the pan was perfect.
In retrospect, I should have noted the thread size for the drain plugs.
Replacing the drain plug with a valve and hose setup of some sort would make future changes much faster and easier.

What was the part number that ZF provided? Was it the same as in the post above?

The part number for the filter kit is zf hurth 3312199031. Google that part number for prices. I ordered mine from Hale Marine. Their price worked best for me with the shipping.
Each kit has a filter and two O rings. The larger O ring is folded and stuffed inside the filter. It could be easy to miss in there.

What ATF did you use? I'll be changing mine soon and just found out that when the boat was serviced in the spring when I took delivery it had Valvoline MaxLife ATF full synthetic in it. Not sure if that is recommended by ZF since like mentioned they have the European versions. No issues with what's in it currently(about 75 hrs)

Also, how much fluid did each transmission take?

I have same transmissions. I spoke to ZF a couple weeks ago. Any quakity DexMerc as i recall. 7.4 quarts each. Call it 2 gallons

I bought 2 gallons of Valvoline at Walmart. After initial fill, the rechecking after running and topping off, my transmissions took just about their listed capacity.
Not a bad job overall, but would be much quicker and easier if a valve and hose replaced the drain plug because of the location of the filter hole on that transmission in our era 410.
You’ll see what I mean when you do it.
I should have noted the thread size for the drain plug. It would be great if the next guy to do the fluid change could check the threads and post it. The Hex head size is 22mm.
I picture a valve (like a “Fumoto Drain Valve”) that is threaded on one end to replace the drain plug, and setting it up with a nipple on the other end that a hose could be secured to with a clamp.
The hose could be something like 3/8” ID fuel line.
Use about 2 feet of hose that is capped on the loose end like the one coming off the Reverso is.
Except, I would probably use an adapter that is barbed on one end to go in to the hose, and had 3/4” male hose on the other, then cap it with a 3/4” female hose cap.
The goal would be to be able to uncap the hose, connect that threaded end to an adapter on the end of my Jabsco oil change pump which already has a female hose adapter inline on it for the Mercruiser dip stick tubes.
Once connected, I would be able to open the drain valve on the transmission, turn on my pump, and pull the old ATF out.
The hose could be left in place ready for next use, and in the unlikely event it were to get damaged, there would be no risk of it causing fluid to leak out while running because the valve is closed back on the transmission.
Once set up and in place, it would probably take more time to raise the engine hatch and get in the bilge than to drain the ATF out of one of the transmissions.

John.

I’ve been busy with work and accumulating the necessary pieces, parts and supplies to do a number of jobs once I drain the ATF. Getting that thread and posting how to put a drain is on my list, but will be a couple more weeks. I’ll post picks and part numbers once I get going.

That’s great Dave! Take a quick look at the Fumoto Drain Valves. So far they look to be a good choice. Figured I’d contact them once I know the thread size to see if they have one that has male metric threads on one side to screw in to the transmission and SAE female on the other end to screw a nipple adapter in to.

Hate to say, its going to be after Christmas.

Looks like not much more is going to get done on my boat until then either.
Weather has been really crappy here.
I wouldn’t be doing that modification until next fall anyway when it’s time to change the transmission fluids again. But once I have the thread size I’m going to start collecting the needed parts so they’re ready to go.
My next project is getting the tridata and autopilot talking to the MFD’s like you did a few months ago.
Just waiting for the boatyard to shrinkwrap. That way I can open everything up, take stock of what’s there, and leave the dash panels opened while I order the needed stuff.
After that it will be on to my least favorite task. The PIA zincs.

Mine was 1/2" NPT threads.

Here is my approach to the draining the transmission fluid. I have a bucket pump so using garden hose fittings was simpler and works better for me than a permanent pump.

Thanks Frank. That looks like a perfect setup.
I have a Jabsco bucket pump too and that’s pretty much what I had in mind.
My drain plug has a 22mm hex head so I’m thinking that I probably have metric threads.
I should have checked it while I had the plug out last month while changing the fluid and filter in both of them.

Are you sure it wasn't 7/8 with paint on it?
