340 SUNDANCER THREAD

Thanks everyone for the advice. I think the mufflers will be my long term project. Maybe do one a year in order to lessen the pain. Has anyone done this retrofit themselves that could share their part numbers or sourcing. Thanks

I did this project a few years ago. Very painless and I only had to buy a couple of pieces of exhaust tubing. I'm dealing with some memory loss (jokingly) but I think I remember buying the Vernalift mufflers from the manufacture directly and the gentleman that I spoke to was familiar with the parts upgrade . For some reason I think I dropped a grand on the project. I'm heading to the boat tomorrow, I'll see if I have the receipts for you to reference part numbers. I think the company was Centek???
Hey what props are you running on your boat? I have 17x17 Nibral Hy-Torque props. I'm not happy at all with them and I'm looking to try a better prop that might give me some better cruising performance. I have a 2000 with the Horizons.

Hey there, what props are you running in your '99-2002 340? I have the 380 Horizons package and I am not happy with my 3 blade 17x17 Hy-Torque props. Not much info on 340's with the Horizons out there . I'm looking at Acme 3 blade, Michigan DJX and DQX props not sure if I need to go 4 blade considering the e.a.r. of the newer cnc cut wheels that are being produced. BTW my current props are hitting all the specs properly, clean bottom, power is right, props are tuned, ect.... I would like to achieve better lift and maybe drop a couple rpms and hold the same speed if possible. Maybe some additional cupping would help. My boat came with a bow thruster so docking performance isn't a concern enough to want that gain by 4 blade. I rode on a same hull 340 with 8.1's and I wanted to set my boat on fire I was so disappointed with how my boat runs after being on that boat. Hopefully someone else here has some relevant info.
Regards,

Eric

I've never had the desire to light my rig on fire though she's no rocket ship when fully loaded with fuel and people. I'm running 4 blade props, plenty of get-up for the kind of boating I do. I assume you were comparing apples-to-apples on the 8.1's with regard to the load on the boat (fuel, people, etc)?

My boat will jump out of the water like a Donzi with 1/16 tanks of fuel and two people onboard. 220 gallons of fuel later and dinghy on the platform...and she's not quite as sporty.

No it was apples to oranges, considering we have different drivelines. I believe that the 8.1's are connected to 2.1 gear boxes while my 7.4 Horizons are hooked to 1.5 boxes. The 8.1's are usually propped with 18x22 wheels while the 7.4 got the 17x17. I'm not expecting the same performance but wanted to see if anyone else with the Horizons was able to improve their cruising experience by replacing their wheels with any of the modern technology props on the market.

I had a 2001 340DA, and worked with ACME in Big Rapids, MI to find the perfect wheels for mine. I ended up with 4 blades, and my boat jumped out of the hole, and felt like I had added horsepower overall. If I remember correctly I lost maybe 1.2 MPH on the top end, but it was worth it. ACME claims to be experts on the 340's, and all of their wheels are CNC machined with a ball nose end mill which leaves grooves on the surface that supposedly give you more grip. Good luck in your search.

Thanks Tom, which power package did you have and do remember what size wheels they cut for you?

I had the 7.4's, and knew you would ask but for the life of me can't find my file with that info. I'd suggest going to their website, and filling out their form and then calling them to discuss. They were great to work with, and like I said they claimed to be experts on the 340's.

I spoke to them and they didn't have info for the 7.4 Horizons. Plenty of info on the standard 7.4 and 8.1's but nothing for thus package. I'm willing to spend the money with them but I would like to try to get it right on the first set and not have to play up and down in the travel lift trying to find the right wheels. Thanks for your help Tom. I'm going to do a full write up on thus once I'm done so the next guy looking doesn't run into the same lack of info.

Thanks for the info and very interested in what you find out. I have the same boat 01 340 with the horizons but have the 3 blade 17/16C props on it.

stay tuned, I ordered a set of Michigan DQX Nibral 17x16 light cup props. I hope to be back in the water by next weekend. Mike at Deep Blue Yacht Supply had good knowledge of this setup and was very helpful. They also had the best price I could find. I will post a complete list of results when I get going again.

I have 2002, 8.1s and spinning 18/22s

I would like some better cruise speed for sure. Right now 3500rpms = 26ishmph

Wot = 41.8gps mph..

I would kill for 30mph @ 3500.

My 2002 340DA with 8.1's also has the stock props, which are 18" x 22". On average, I get around 25 kts at 3600 RPM, which is around 28 mph. All depends on the loads of course... if I have full fuel and water tanks, a bunch of people, and an appropriate emergency beer reserve, it's going to take a little more than 3600 RPM to get to 25 kts, but I'm happy :)

Incidentally, in the 2002 340DA manual, it says that the standard 6.2's were propped with 17" x 19". The 4.2 Diesel had the 17" x 17" in 2002 anyway. Based on that I would think the 7.4's could have a little more than the 17x17.

HUH... Maybe the 2002 hull is a little different. I have a clean smooth bottom and tuned my props. Right now I'm at 18x22 and 18x22.5 with .250 cup. Last season I had a .125 cup and still hit 29mph at 3500 rpm. I'm hoping to get 30 this year with a little more cup and a tweek on the blades. I still hit my max WOT of 4600.

Man I don’t know how you guys doing that. I mean my top speed is there 41.8. So it’s not weak. But my cruise at 3600 is 26-27. Not 30 like I want. Granted I am hoping it picks up some with all chain on the nose.

OK 340 owners, here is your big chance for some discounted upgrades. As many of you are aware, we sold our beloved 2002 340 a few months ago, and although I was unaware of this at the time, my wife had commissioned a mattress company to make a custom mattress for the V-berth. It arrived after we sold the boat, so it's sitting upstairs, still wrapped in plastic. This is a custom, 7" thick foam mattress, with a stitched topper. It is 2 pieces, just like the original, so forward locker access is preserved. And yes, it is WAY more comfortable than the original. If anyone is interested, send me a PM, and we can discuss specifics.

I also have quite a few leftover 340 items - trim pieces, replacement shaft seals, etc. I also have a couple of my custom drink holders left - one in teak, the other in white polyethylene, custom made for the 1999 - 2002 340. And, of course, I still offer my davit systems.

Dale
Hi Dale, did you ever sell the mattress?
Thanks George

George,

Yes, the mattress was sold. All the other items are still in production though....

Hi I have been working restoring my 2000 340 Sundancer for the past 3 years and made a dedicated Facebook group titled Dolce Famigilia @ https://www.facebook.com/groups/1595966287107687/

I decided to create this Group to document the purchase and restoration of my 2000 Sea Ray 340 Sundancer. I am no expert but thought I would share my DYI repair successes and mistakes. I hope you enjoy.

I believe i have three blade props. Not sure the specs on them. At 3600 Rpm I'm at about 27-28 mph.

Ref the mufflers, any luck finding the documents on them. How hard was it to relocate your batteries and wire them in? As always, any advice is greatly appreciated

I will be at the marina tomorrow. I will look for the docs. Sorry I haven't gotten back on this, I have been crazy busy at work and the weather here has sucked.

I had a pretty bad day.... can't find the receipt for the mufflers, I'll be in the bilge on Friday and I'm pretty sure the part numbers are still on the mufflers. I'm feeling pretty bummed out, my props were delivered today. I had my son load them in my truck and meet me at the marina after work. Man I was like a kid at Xmas. I opened the box and read the receipt and everything looked good. I went to examine the shiny new wheels and I noticed that the hole in them looked a little small, so I looked at the side of the box and sure enough ..... 1.25 bore! I wanted to puke! I clearly ordered 1.5 bore and the receipt stated such. So I walked the prop over to my boat and attempted to slide it on the shaft and it's the wrong bore. My original props are at a local shop getting redone. Just to have a good set of spares. I'm going to to call Deep blue yacht supply to see how quick they can turn this around. My boat has to be off the yard by Friday so it looks like I'm stuck with a short hull out once the correct wheels arrive. I'm going to drown my sorrows in rum, good night.......
