I bought a 2003 240sd with the 350Mag and a smartcraft system. I had the batteries in my garage on a battery tender for the winter. I check them before reinstalling them and they showed full charge. They started the boat one time and then just clicks, not even enough juice left in them to get a half turn. My question is the smart craft flashed the engine icon and the bell icon the whole time we where running the boat. the engine had good oil pressure and water pressure, never got warm of made any kind of knocking or ticking noise. Could the bad batteries cause the smartcraft system to send the error?

How old are the batteries and what type? How did you 'check' them?

Low voltage can cause many problems. Just because the voltage reading was good doesn't tell the whole story about their condition. New ones will probably cure your issue.

Agree - fully charged but diminished capacity. Alarms were likely low voltage.

Yes low voltage. The sensors work off a 5v reference system that feeds to the ECM with what to do data. Fuel, air, spark, temp, pressure, revoluions. If the volts are low the ecm can't read the sensor and all hell shows up on performance and or alarms.

Get new batteries.

Sorry it took so long to update and respond (life go in the way of my boating) So I took everyones advice and bought new batteries, on a Dry run seems to have done the trick, The Mississippi water levels and debris have kept me from doing a full out test, Hoping for a good cruise tonight. Thanks Everyone

OK so no alarms or warning codes. Brand new problem. The Gauges just keep fluctuating. I am taking it in to the shop to have them fix it. Let the spending begin, Man I love being a Boat owner. I am pretty sure I have paid for at least one of my boat mechanics kids college by now.

The joy of ownership. Do you boat on the Alton pool? Trailer or marina? Just curious, fellow St. Louis inhabitant. Also, just out of curiosity, which gauges were fluctuating?

Yes I am out of Johns Boat Harbor. Usually hang out at either 2 Branch or head up to Turkey. 521 and Enterprise have become to crowded. Also it was all the gauges except for the voltage and the oil pressure. Not sure why those two.

If you have the SC1000 Systems Monitor display unit like the one in the picture below, try to do a Master Reset to see if that will clear up the fluctuation issue. You just have to push a series of buttons so it is very easy to do before taking it into a shop. I also posted a page from my owners manual stepping you through the process. I had the same issue and it fixed mine.

Thank you to everyone again, got the gauges under control. Buying this boat has been a huge mistake. Have owned it for 6 months and it has been in the shop for 4 months. Now it is blowing the 90 amp fuse at the starter, a TSB has been issued from Mercury and the recall has been performed on the orange wire and it is still happening, now they have to hook up multiple volt meters to try and determine if it is the alternator or starter solenoid. I am hoping that I get my boat back by 2 tomorrow, if not they said it will be after the 4th before I get it back.

starter solenoid would have nothing to do with the fuse. it is wired to the alt output and the ships main power and in between is the 50 circuit breaker.

What was causing the gauges to fluctuate?
Sorry for taking so long to respond. There were multiple issues with the wiring. First the wire that ran from the starter to the alternator ran in between the exhaust manifold and the engine head. The insulation on the wire eventually failed and it grounded itself to the engine. This was blowing the 90 amp fuse. The gauges were fluctuating because the ground on the smart craft was loose. The "Wire Cannon" that is located at the back of the engine was starting to corrode and had loose contacts. It took the Dealership about 2 weeks to get it all situated, A big Thank You to Saint Charles Boat and Motor In Saint Charles MO, They fixed everything at no charge to me even though everything was a design flaw from the factory and no fault of theirs. (I bought the boat From St. Charles Boat And Motor in December 2017)
