40 sedan bridge forum

I case anyone is interested - I just ordered 2 new ones and they were 81.00 each. I ordered from this website - http://www.hahn-gassprings.com/ The phone number on the spring is no longer active and actually routes you to a Phone Scam, my advise don't call that number.
That's great. Not a bad price. Thats down from the $130 quoted several years ago.

I just love boating, it is never getting boring.... I found recently this little leak (see pic) on my starboard exhaust pipe elbow what goes straight down through the hull. Did somebody have the same problem and if yes, how did u fix it?

I was leaking at the elbow, but all I needed to do was clean and reseal.

It looks like you can repair by grinding out the crack, and fiberglass it. Unfortunately you'll need to haul the boat, that is below the waterline.

Has anyone replaced their bridge shift cables? Seems like I read a post somewhere about doing it, and it not being that bad, but could not find it again. My starboard side shift cable is pretty tough to move. Being that they're 20 years old, may not be a bad thing to do anyway.....With a little investigation, it looks like someone has forced, and bent it at some point. I read somewhere that you can get a link nut that matches the threads (10-32?), and screw the new cable to the old, and slide it through as a fish tape. I would like to order a new cable, or (cables) before I pull the other out. I see the Sea Ray part numbers in the parts list which of course don't tie to a Teleflex number, so have my local Marine Max tracking that down, unless one of you guys already has this. I have visions of this thing snapping at just the wrong time in my tight marina fairway in a crosswind.

Crazy request - I pulled the horn cover off so I could match up a replacement. I put the screws back in and taped up the hole. My detail guy came out and took screws out and "doesn't remember" where he put them. Does anyone have any idea the size and length of those screws? I am an hour away from boat and wanted to order or pick them up before I went back. Thank you in advance.

Hey mmills congrats on the 400 purchase from Ga. I am currently buying the 03 from Hollywood Fl. and the shipper is looking to know the final height after arch removal. Is that something you know or can i contact your shipper to find out?? It sounds like its around 13' 3" with props and rudders off ??

Sorry to dive right in. Let me say HELLO to every one on here. Love reading the posts and learning about my 400 even b-4 i buy. My wife and i are from northern Wi. but we winter in Bradenton FL. We will be spending half our summer up north on the boat at Bayfield Wi on lake superior around the Apostle Islands. Thier awsome. Thanks Paul

First Congrats! I used Rays Marine Services - (706) 387-0286 - I cant say enough good things about them. He knows what he is doing for sure. On mine they only had to take off the Arch, all bridge seats, lower antennae's, and the side windscreen. No props, rudders, helm, etc. (I dont know height after all that)

Now a few questions :)

  • Where are you shipping it to?
  • I looked at that boat, after I had signed on mine and wondered what its story was. Is it in expected shape for the price?

I watched someone use that same "trick" of attaching the old to the new and then pulling through on a 480 Sedan Bridge. It went smooth however there were a few places that it got hung up and they had to poke around to coax it along. If I remember it was about a 4 hour job...30 min to pull cable...3.5 hours figuring out how!

I have the "Shipping/Documentation Dimensions" if anyone needs them. I can't figure out how to upload a .pdf here though.
Do you have the over the road shipping info on a 400? My shipper is looking for height and prop shaft separation?? Thanks Paul

We are going to North Wi. I will contact your folks thanks. We are finding a few things wrong and they are attempting to repair now b-4 we close the deal. Over heat on port engine, some hull blisters, no charge from port alt, oil leak on port, you know all the things you get with an owner who just turns the key for 15 years. Whats my bargaining power now after survey????? Hopefully some!!

Are these all things your surveyor found?... when I closed on our boat, my offer was "subject to survey and sea trial"... inevitably some issues were found during survey, which my seller simply fixed at his cost prior to closing... good luck!

Bill ZZ13 is a bit of a savant with these boats, in particular the Cummins Engines. You may want to PM him on his opinion on the overheating issue. It could get $$ depending on what the problems are.

Thanks, and the oil leak has been chased since new i think. Cummings has records of breather tube and oil pan gasket work back in 04. But then records stop after warranty ran out. Imagine that. Now to find the local guy that's been wrenching on it??? Ya right, and no records of any thing. You can't imagine my cold feet at 3:00 a.m. when i wake up sweating!!!

Mine was really close to 14'3" if I remember correctly but the trailer it was on accommodated the rudders and props. Mine was disassembled down to the uppermost fiberglass. (Helm, windscreen, seats, etc...)

Anyone have a leaky trunk? The aft storage compartment in my boat (aka, Trunk) isn't water tight. Yesterday, I hooked up dock water to a cartridge filter installed right before the water hookup. The hose to the filter wasn't tight and (unbeknownst me at first) there was a steady drip of water into the main storage truck. I never noticed until a few hours later, while working in the bilge, I noticed drips of water coming down the back transom wall. When I discovered the leak at the hose, I turned off the hose, soaked up all the water in the trunk, and the dripping in the bilge stopped.

So, now I want to reseal the trunk. I'm thinking about pouring a thin layer of epoxy on the floor of the trunk and then priming and painting. Thoughts? Anyone else have this issue?

First, look at how he transom locker is built. They are usually an assembly that is bolted to the floor of the cockpit so pouring epoxy into the area will seriously complicate anf future repair you must do in the area. For example, Sea Ray used regular plywood as a filler/core in the base on my 450 where t he thru bolts go . we had to remove the transom locker assy to remove rotted plywood and replace it with a foam filler. I'm not in Florida this week so Ican't go look at a 400 to see the structure.......just examine how yours is built before proceeding.

Thanks, Frank. That's definitely something to consider. I will take a closer look next time I'm down there. I cringe at the thought of even suggesting this, BUT, considering the point you make, maybe a less permanent fix would be a can or two of flex seal (I can't believe I'm even suggesting this).

EDIT: or barrier coat. Maybe that would be the better option.

I replaced mine last year, but forget the exact size. I'm guessing #6 3/4" will do that fine. You may conciser filling a small contain full of various sizes. IMO every boat needs it.
