I want to replace the mattress on my '99 310 DA. I've 'heard' of people buying an inexpensive queen mattress and 'cutting' it.. yes cutting it, to fit the berth. As this sounds pretty self-explanatory, I have no idea how to cut a mattress and have it stay together to not produce a mess. How on earth would you 'close up' the mattress once you're done cutting it?

I would imagine that there are 3 full cuts, or openings. If you're looking at the mattress laying down, it would be the top right, bottom left, and bottom right. I think I can corner off the top left of the mattress without altering it.

I've been down that road, not a fan. I've been through three mattress toppers and memory foam pads and they get easily shifted, make the bed look like shit, and I'm over it. It's great for a temporary fix, but I want something permanent that I throw sheets on and done.

I did mine not with a topper.... a real mattress. 12 inch thick king...
Remove factory cushions, so you have a solid platform.

Cut the 12inch dual foam 8 of stiff and 4 of soft together into to 8 inch dual foam (4and 4) and looks awesome made up

Sleeps amazing.

Can you please describe the process to do this? I simply just want it to fit, and as less complicated and messy as possible.

I bought a 8" thick size double memory foam mattress from Walmart 7 years ago ($240). Brought the box to the boat, removed old OEM mattress, opened new mmfoam mattress and put it up on the bed platform. Waited 24 hours for the mmfoam to expand, laid old mattress on top of new mattress, traced outline with magic marker, removed old mattress and used electric kitchen along with a sharp fillet knife to trim. Most comfortable bed I ever slept on. Anyone that pays 2-3k for a custom boat mattress is either rich, dumb or both. Sorry but it's a waste of money.

No, I'm saying a true memory foam mattress, not a topper

The best solution is to have a custom mattress made. We did that for our 310 and it fits perfectly and sleeps great. Depending on how many nights you spend on board will determine if the investment is worth it. It was to us. About $1,000 plus custom mattress pad and sheets.

I read your post, went to walmart - and found this one: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Spa-Sensations-8-Memory-Foam-Mattress-Multiple-Sizes/328456448

Is that sorta what you're talking about?

We bought regular foam fairly firm and put a 2" memory foam from Costco on top. We glued the topper using 3M spray adhesive. The two stayed together with no issues of slipping. We also have a factory fitted mattress sheet which also helps and then the fancy fitted sheet over it. Cut to shape with a cheap electric knife from Walmart. We used old mattress as a pattern.

Here are a few to show it.
Started with a 12” thick dual density king bed (I needed a king for the width of a 340 birth.)

It was 8” I’d harder foam, 4” of softer topper foam.

Cut 4” off the bottom. So you can see the one pic of the blue softer foam on bottom And white on top and me trimming it. Then once I have the whole thing at 8 inches (I chose 8” so still thick but I could open my closet doors) You lay the factory bed on it upside down. So you get the larger shape.. then you cut.... then you flip it and trim to the smaller shape on the bottom side. What you end up with is a custom fit to the shape of the base and the angle of the v hull...with the top spreading out at the angle of the hull filling the spot for the bed and then you put sheets and a comforter on it. Also we bought the same pillows we have for the house but in a twin bed size for the Boat.. so pillows are what we are used to and nice bed. Real sheets, real comforter... and bam.. sleep like a baby.

Also a pic of the bed made. It’s very nice looking.

I picked up a 6" memory foam and a 2" topper this past spring. Cut them with a $20 carving knife from Amazon. Couldn't be happier with the outcome. For the money (sub $200) it's hard to beat....

We ordered a 3" memory foam gel topper for $109. Traced the mattress pieces onto the topper and cut it to size with the carving knife. Fits perfectly and doesn't slide on top of the mattress. We laid on it for an hour last night as a quick test and it seemed to be a huge improvement.

We're staying on the hook tonight to see if it's as comfortable as it feels.

I still have a factory original (two piece) mattress for a 2002 340 DA, if anyone needs. Is in great shape. The wife unit made me buy a new (several thousand $$) mattress.

Yea my factory one is in my upstairs storage closet along with the bow cushion, and the cockpit sun pads.

Nice! I kinda want to sell mine and do it again. This time with a firmer one. But still Best Boat Boat ever ha
