Hi All:

I posted this on my isolated "320" group and got no response whatsoever, so I thought maybe someone over here may have done this and could provide some answers.

Last year I upgraded my chartplotter from the original to a Raymarine C95. All went well and I really enjoyed the new model. This year I am contemplating upgrading the original Smartcraft SC5000 to Vesselview. My questions to all you aficionados that have upgraded the same way is:

1. Are there any consistent problems encountered with going from the original 2004 SmartCraft to the new VV 4 or 7 models?

2. Which model do you recommend?

4 or 7 both of which should be plug and play.....the 7 provides dual on screen viewing for each engine as apposed to switching views from engine to engine

502 or 702 - these are more complicated to upgrade to but do provide NMEA 2000 connections to my other devices but also about $1000 difference from the 4 & 7

3. I have no thru hull devices for calculation of speed and depth and therefore assume the external black plastic unit mounted on the stern at the bottom calculates all of that. It seems to work ok but should I upgrade that as well by either replacing it or going to a thru hull?

This is an expensive upgrade so I'm trying to see exactly what I need and don't need before ordering parts etc. so any advice is most appreciated.

Thanks to all for any help provided.

If I had these questions/concerns, I would go to our local marine electronics company and talk to them. They have forgotten more than I will ever know, and electronics are changing so fast I wouldn't want to make an expensive mistake. Sorry I couldn't help any more than this but I have learned a good reputable co is worth the extra $$ spent

I am going to go from the sc5000 to the VesselView 1.5. You need to enlarge the cutout, but the system is plug and play.

I’m not going to add VV when it comes time to replace my SC5000, I will get the 250-300$ Bluetooth smartcraft adapter and connect it to vessel view mobile on my iPhone or iPad (android support as well). If that is not reliable enough, and using the gauges is not accurate enough, then I will spring for the VV7, plug and play.

I upgraded to VV4, and it was pretty much plug and play. For the most part, I like it, but I don't like that they got rid of the fuel to destination information. I can still get GPH, and MPG, but the fuel burn to waypoint data is gone. (apparently some idiot ran out of fuel and sued, so the lawyers won, and mercury had the last laugh)
