Purchased a new 2018 with a Mercury outboard.
Splashed all over the website and Marcom, there is a 5 year warranty bow to stern. Seems simple.
I called Mercury to verify my engine warranty and it is listed as 3 years. I called the dealer and was told "it is 5 year but listed somewhere else, not Mercury". Hmmm...., what? So I contacted the Sea Ray factory and was told "Mercury supplies/packages their engines with an additional 2 years of coverage along with their standard 3 years to match our 5 years. They use a Brunswick Product Protect policy to do so. The dealer should be able to confirm the coverage with BPP."
So if year 4 there is an engine issue, how would an authorized Mercury repair facility know if I have a warranty left since their records only showed 3? Who would I call to get warranty work approved/authorized? Where is the BPP policy documented and who do I or the warranty service facility call?
It shouldn't be this difficult to document the warranty...

I know there are some Sea Ray dealer folks on here, could you help explain this?

The standard warranty from Merc is 3 years. Beyond that someone is paying for an extended warranty. I purchased a two year extended Merc warranty when I bought my 330DA in 2013. I had several claims. The local Merc authorized repair facility processed the extended warranty work like an original warranty.

Great response JimT.....

Paulswagelock.....it sure seems, either the dealer or Sea Ray obtained the extended warranty for the boat at the time of your purchase....I say, it seems.
I would encourage you to contact your salesperson and have them, explained the extended warranty, and provide you with the documentation that verifies and validates the assumed extension. You paid them hard earned money, and the time to do this is now, while the boat is new and protected. If you need help contacting Brunswick Product Protection, just ask. I know them well.

Thanks Capt. Rusty. I am working with the dealer, who is fairly large, but I must be the first person to ever ask for documentation in writing. They do not have it, nor know where to find it, but are looking / calling.
Everyone at the dealer and my contacts at the factory assure me there is 5 years on the motor, but I am striking out so far to get written documentation. The boat and first 3 years on the motor are documented, but these last two years on the motor are vague.
I might take you up on a contact from BPP, I assume they have my motor listed since I am told they have the last two years warranty.

I have a similar situation, except an inboard 2+3. I hounded the dealer for documentation but still haven't got any from them. However I called Mercury and Brunswick and they were both very helpful. They had my name, engine, serial numbers all documented in their system. Obviously the dealer did that part. They emailed me information on both parts of the warranty.

Dutchman - what number did you call for Brunswick?
I talked to BPP today and they did not have any records on my boat, but they admit that it might take longer than the month I have owned it for them to receive it. Then I received a response from Sea Ray customer service from an email I sent stating that Mercury will update their files once they have my information, and that it just takes a while.

Overall I like the boat and the experience has been mostly positive with the exception of some production scheduling issues early on that Corporate quickly fixed. But getting documentation on the warranty that they spend tons of money advertising seems much more difficult then it should be.

I would not stress about it. As long as your local Merc dealer shows you in their system you are good to go for 5 years. The weak link will be the Passport extended warranty that purports to cover everything else. It has a a lot more exclusions than than the Merc engine warranty. Just go boating and enjoy!

My extra warranty was a promo by Merc called Mercury Power of Protection. The Brunswick # is 866-404-3064. I have owned the boat now for about 9 months and it did take them several months to register the product. Have your engine serial # handy if you do contact them.

It doesn't seem that hard, does it? There may be some 'clearing' delay in getting the info from the dealer back to BPP and it might just be a few months before everything 'shows up in their system'. This may be another item that one insists on up front, prior to signing any documents. If a salesperson knows a sale is imminent, they usually work a lot harder to check off all the boxes to close it. Once the deal is done, there's a lot less incentive as it's only their reputation on the line, not their checkbook.

Good info though; I know I'm learning off your experience!

Now go enjoy the boat!
