Official 280 Sundancer Thread

My solution for holding the a/c grille in, interference fit with a little bit of plastic jammed in. I used a piece of tie wrap. Held for a 50 mile round trip, in chop, in the Houston ship channel so I think I'm OK....

Smartcraft gauges on our new to us 05 280: I'd like to reset some of the data like fuel used and mileage. Can you tell me how to do that (yes I did read the manual)?

Also on the trim syn on the speedo doesn't report what I have on the separate tachs. As an example both tacks show 1 for trim on each side - but the trim sync on the speedo shows port =1 Starboard =2

Any help here would be appreciated.

If memory serves me....to reset fuel used, go to that screen and push the mode and - at the same time. I know you said you read the manual, but I specifically remember that being in there.

Thx I went back into the manual and found it for Fuel and Odometer. Now to figure out why I show a difference in engine trim. Re; both tacks show 1 for trim on each side - but the trim sync on the speedo shows port =1 Starboard =2

I've reset our trims using the process in the manual a couple of times and while they initially sync 1 to 1 for port/stbd they drift off pretty quickly

did you ever install all new canvas on your 280 sundancer ?
Sorry for the delay. Been out of town. Yes, I have replaced all the canvas. Purchased from Great Lakes Boat Tops, the original supplier. Matched perfect. Just had to install the snaps. Get the Press-n-Snap tool, you’ll be glad you did.

Getting ready to replace the duckbill valves on the vacuflush vacuum generator. My manual is on the boat - does anyone know how many valves and the size?

The size is 1-1/2” and it takes 4. The part number is 385310076. There are 2 in each package.

Thanks - just ordered them on Amazon which turned out to be the cheapest. 4 seems like a lot but if it keeps the fluids from backing up like my Jabsco's did on previous boats I'm ok with that,

This boat showed well, but I needed to see another one. So I took a look at an 03 in Fort Myers. It has 5.0/BIII and looked every bit as nice as the 07. This is the one I am pursuing, as I could not justify the gap in price between the two. We are doing the survey next Thursday so we will see how that goes.
Just got home from the survey, it was rescheduled to today due to a required repair to the out-drive trim.
The boat did well, ran strong but there were several issues that need to be addressed.
1. Hot water heater is leaking raw cooling water basically pumping from the engine into the bilge. There is a broken fitting on the heater where the water is leaking.
2. The STBD outdrive (B3) clunks when going into gear, and it is leaking hydraulic oil. The trim reservoir was noticeably lower at the end of the sea trial, also the drive moves up and down excessively when we pulled on it.
3. The generator did not start.

Those were significant issues. Some lesser issues, although important:
1. Refrigerator not working
2. Port engine ran a bit warm, may need the cooling system to be flushed.
3. One nav light out.
4. Broken hinge on the head door
5. Gauges were not operating smoothly, STBD gauges were intermittent.

I know it is a 14 y/o boat, so not making a big issue other than the top three above. Once we get the survey report, we will come up with a negotiating strategy to see how we can address the issues.

is there a post somewhere that shows which joints need to be opened to access the duckbills?

here is an " in progress" shot of the floor, before adding back the trim and border pieces. doubling up on the corrugated plastic allows the allure flooring to sit well enough. I chose not to glue it down, so there is it can be redone at any time. you can still feel a little of the floor's unevenness if you walk barefoot , but not enough to bother me. easiest way for me to get rid of the carpet was to use vice grips and grab the nap of the carpeting. 2 people can pretty much rip it out in one piece. the main floor areas come up easy, the trim had alot of staples that had to be pulled up. using the vice grips to grab and twist using the rounded side of the vice grips was a bit tedious but not too bad.

Paul you do very nice work. I especially like the vinyl work you did. As I mentioned in a previous post I'm resurfacing the floor with Bondo to even it out before I install the allure. Btw I'm only doing the main cabin floor and not the step up flooring in the bow, stern or under the table.

Also currently I'm planning on using a latex silicone to 'glue' down the floor - more for the cushioning effect and leveling effect of the silicone than adhesive properties. However before I do I will test it to ensure its adhesive and setting properties. Also this is a better solution than a contact cement or liquid nails. I'm still up in the air on the perimeter termination.

thanks, it looks like the valves are below the main pump and in the line. good luck

Hmmm seems like a lot of issues. some minor like door hinge others like instruments or LU may not be. Keep in mind those are the things he found.

Age of the boat is not as important as how well the boat is looked after. These are the issues you found and probably the owner knew about unless they were not using the boat. Then that is another issues. How long have these top 3 been going on for? Why did the owner not address them? Does the boat show excessive tear and wear vs just got a detail job?

I agree with all these posts, there seems to be no mention of water leaks, so I would also check the upholstery. look for soft spots that indicate the wood was wet underneath. our boats tend to leak from the portholes, bow rub rail, and the bases of each rail post. the water tends to show up by the bathroom door, lower bunk bed or beneath the v berth.

I'm having some throttle issues on my 2005 with twin 4.3L Merc Alphas. The throttles are very stiff and require a lot of force to move in either direction. I'm assuming that I need to replace the throttle/shift cables (I still need to remove the throttles and make sure they aren't the root cause).

Has anyone replaced these and have a link to any part numbers? I searched the threads and only found broken links.

Engines sound good, maintain RPM, and no idle issues.
