Official 270 Amberjack thread (2005+)

Purchased a comprehensive electronics package that is awaiting install. Nav unit will require custom fiberglass work to dash area for nice flush install.
Items will include
Raymarine
  • es98 nav unit
  • rd418hd radar
  • Cpt 120 bronze transducer
Oceanled Sport S3116s midnight blue underwater lights

IcomM400bb Vhf radio
Sounds great! Quite an upgrade from that Sitex unit I'm sure!!
Underwater and other LED lighting is also on my list to check next week with the service manager for costs to install etc.

I also need to repaint the hull (may tackle this myself) and get the cabin carpet steam cleaned or replaced.

Curious as if anyone has replaced their cabin carpet with the 'fake teak' stuff...I need such a small piece to do the floor, it's cost prohibitive to order from what i'm told.......

I know I’m late here but I replaced mine too. Ace hardware had a seat and cover that matched up perfectly. $18 in case someone in future needs one.

Horn replacement...anyone replace their horn on their 270 AJ? Mine always sounded like a muffled duck call, and then stopped working last weekend altogether...Where is the horn located anyways?

Yep, the horn is a bit embarrassing. It's located on the starboard side of the bow. Mine dies last year and I replaced it with this one from amazon.

It was was a perfect fit. I was not able to reuse the original connector, however.

Thank you!! What connector did you use or purchase? Sorry, I've never replaced a horn so probably a dumb question!

I used a couple of 3m scotchlok waterproof connectors. Slide in the wires and press with a plier to make wa waterproof connection. I had some left over from another project. Got from Home Depot in think, or Ace.

Thank you for all your help! Is the horn noticeably louder than the OEM horn?

Mmm, not really. Its louder than when the horn was broken, but about the same as when new. It’s serviceable.

Honestly I carry a compressed air horn for if I really need someone’s attention

Nice layout and glass work.

Hi guys, appreciate a thread dedicated to our boat! Check out my postings from the past if you are looking for something. Have an awesome day!

Has anyone replaced the rod boxes on either side of the cockpit? They are tapered thinner toward the stern to accommodate the side air intakes. According to my dealer the are discontinued from Sea Ray.

Hello all, I see that this is an older thread but it was going so well. I am new to Sea Ray boats, having just (like 3 days ago) purchased my first. A 2005 270 Amberjack. It needs a lot of work but I think I can have it all completed by spring 2020. First off is the Bravo III stern drive, very bad corrosion and pitting also with a major seal leak. I will replace with a new drive. While at the rear I plan on going over all the wiring. as well as hoses. Removing all through hull items and resealing. The stern drive appears to be the worst but I haven't gotten into the motor yet. I saw where some were replacing the electronics, I will be doing this also. From dealing with my last boat, I would prefer not to have touch screens. When the boat is rocking it is hard to hit the correct icon. I also need a new Bimini top, this one has been sun damaged beyond use. Can someone tell me the best place to get it replaced at a good price?
Are there things I should be looking out for? My gold is to be offshore fishing by May 2020.

Great Lakes Boat Tops was the canvas OEM for this model. They could likely supply a direct replacement. Or, you could have a local canvas shop replace it.

I had a very good canvas guy replace mine. I also had a custom camper back made that attached with the same zipper as the fastback. This improved they boat’s utility infinitely, but the rear bow would not be optimal for fishing.

Thanks for the canvas lead, I will contact them. I am still waiting on Sea Ray to get back with me about which gear ratio i have on Bravo III so i can place my order. So in the meantime it looks like I am going to start electrical tracing to ensure everything is good before I connect my power cord.

My 2006 270 AJ also had a Bravo 3. The drive serial number was 0W288281. Per a lookup on marineengine.com, the corresponding drive part number is 5441500T. A search for that part number shows with a gear ratio of 2.20.

If you have not already done so I recommend you download both the owner's manual and parts manual from the Sea Ray site (look under Owners Resources). The parts manual lists every part on the boat (except for the engine / drive). The owner's manual has detailed drawings of all the standard and optional systems, including electrical schematics.

The download was the 1st thing I did. Sea Ray did get back with me and I have the 2.20:1

Today is my 1st warm day here in South Carolina and I have started on the hull. I am pressure washing then hitting it with rubbing compound. Once that is done then any defects in the fiberglass will be fix as well as everything resealed.

I probably should video everything with hopes of being a youtube star but I hate videos where the person feels they have to talk for half of the video to explain stupid stuff.

Thought I'd update this.

The rod box dimensions as measured on my 2006 270 AJ were 55 1/2" x 16 1/8". The maximum depth of the aft end was 2 3/4 inches due to the engine air intakes. The cutout opening was 53 3/4" x 14 1/2".

After a bunch of research looking for units that would fit, I found that SSI Custom Plastics was the OEM supplier. Their rod box No. 53004000 (tapered) is the correct fit. Dimensions for the product are: 55 ¾”W x 16 ½”h x 4 ½” - 2 ½”D. Cut out - 53 7/8”L x 14 5/8”H.

SSI quoted me $375 for a pair. However, it's not a stocked item. These boxes are made in runs when a manufacturer places an order. Unfortunately they didn't explain that to me at the time so I didn't order a set and missed out on adding my order to a run that was already scheduled. When I was ready later they had no orders scheduled. SSI would have made a set for me with a minimum order of 10 pair, but I really wasn't interested in that.

I'm just putting this info out there in case someone could get the timing right or wanted to coordinate a group buy or something. SSI's number is 301-373-2372.

I was thinking about replacing one of my rod boxes with slide in storage box holder. It's something I think I would have to design but I think it can be done. I have these water proof 2 inch thick tackle boxes and being able to slide them into a holder would be great.

Ordered a new Bravo III stern drive today. 1st major mechanical part to be replaced. I would like to find a good deal on a motor to drop in, I will also add a closed cooling system to it.
