Official 400EC thread

That's awesome Harold. I just wish you had been about 5 months earlier with this. I replaced both of my power inlets but I didn't remove anything, just did it blind and reaching up. I definitely had to have help from my son on the outside of the boat but we got them both changed. Thanks for sharing.

Nice info post Harold. I had to get up there myself last July.

Hey guys - Does anyone tow a PWC behind their 400 on a regular basis? I'd like to be able to do it this summer and was wondering if someone had experience with it and ideas on how to make it safe and secure. I'm fully aware that the PWC water intake must be clamped or closed off somehow.

Here's another one for you guys. My boat came with an empty cabinet where the ice maker used to be. It looks like I can buy replacement ice makers from both isotherm and Vitrifrigo that will fit the opening. But i'm not real sure I want to put an ice maker in as it seems like it might be more trouble than it's worth. If I could find a refrigerator that would fit I think I would go that route, but they all are a bit to tall. The sink in that cabinet limits the max H dimension to 19.25". Has anyone come up with a creative solution to replace the old Icerette 82?

I'm curious about this as well, and will later be addressing an issue of how to attach my 10' dingy. The 400 swim platform looks like it'll be great for hanging out and climbing up, but I'm not so sure about hanging a dingy off of it. Towing at a slow speed may be an option (for some trips).

Thanks Talon. I see that you did not need to remove the trim with the salon lights. Now that I think about it, I probably did not need to either. If I had removed the forward screws of the window trim it probably would have come straight out.

By the way, I wanted to ask, how did you get the picture in your signature? I tried but it did not work.

I carry a Mercury inflatable, the 280 model, quite often. I flip it up on the lower platform and tie it off on both sides. It takes up all of the lower platform but I can still get across the upper platform and still reach the fender rack.

I added two small cleats to the outer edge of the platform to keep the dinghy in place. If you zoom in on the picture you can just make out the one on the port side.

I wanted to use the Hurley Davits but the platform is too close to the water and the dinghy would have been too far out. It would have been hit by the stern wave coming off plane.

I do have a refrigerator/freezer in its place...I’ll have to look for the brand next time I’m at the boat in a couple weeks.

I thought about the refrigerator too as the icemaker was not functional when I bought my boat. Ultimately I picked up a Uline ice maker on eBay and was glad I did. It comes in real handy having a supply of ice for drinks and for the coolers.

Harold - thanks for that description and photo. That makes sense that you could set the dingy on the lower platform. I had weaver davits on my 300 and just had that in my head and also thought that the dingy would drag in the water on this platform. I haven't had a chance to attempt using the dingy with my 400, but now I have a picture in my mind what is possible.

You can certainly use the Weaver Davits as well. I was actually going too but I was advised against it by an inflatable guy I used as the Weaver mounts that go on the dinghy itself would not fit properly on my dinghy (not enough open space in the right places).

As least on my 300 platform, the Weaver davits held the tube of the dingy just below the bottom of the platform, so it's easy for wash to grab it and push it around. It really rode fine, but my 400 platform is already closer to the water and gets a fair amount of wash on when I'm on the lake. I can imagine that in the open water it can be a little worse.

It might be easier to load up the davits, but placing "on" the platform like you've done will basically get it out of the wash completely.

Just sold my 1997 400EC and the snap in carpeting did not go with it. We did not use it and it is the original Sea Ray issue. Should probably be local because of the size/weight to ship. Carpet is in good shpe but could use a shampoo. Any offers?

I'm in Toledo, Oh.

Hey guys,

Does anyone know where I can find an Owner's Manual for a 1994 400EC?

Mike

Thanks, I've tried that and could not find an owner's manual for a '94 400EC. i just sent Sea Ray an email asking for help so we'll see what happens.
They don't have them for every year. You just have to find something close and it's about 95% accurate for your year model.

Sorry...just a couple of weeks age I pitched everything from my 1997. That would have been close.
Good luck, there has to be one around somwhere.

Haven’t had carpet on deck in a while....hate to see it go to waste if it’s in decent condition.
But, we’d need to ship to CT.

After taking the boat out for the weekend I found the starboard engine to be a bit sluggish, and have noticed a very slight miss for the last few months. So after a compression test I pulled the heads and found this on the left bank. Looks like someone else has been in here before, and used automotive head gaskets. That's a big no no!

On the right bank I found two tulip shaped intake valves, so off to the machine shop for a valve job.

An hour later the machine shop called to tell me that both heads are cracked! Luckily they had a set for only $250 using my parts. What's next??

Hi Talon,

I think I've got similar problems with my port engine. I'm thinking about pulling the heads myself and had a couple of questions for you:
1. I'm assuming that you did this with the engine in the boat and boat in the water, is that correct?
2. How difficult is it to get at everything? Can you get a torque wrench in there, etc. I can handle pulling and replacing the heads if I have access.
3. Any other tips that you might have?
