so as most of you probably do , I make a sport out of browsing at yachtworld.com. I cant get over how many boats show signs of sloppy attempts at "engine freshening" with spray paint. I think its so tacky and looks ecven worse with the hoses / clamps / wires all sprayed and oversprayed. does anybody else share this opinion?

I've seen some RRs done really well and most not so. Like any paint job prep is 90% of the job. If you saw my 31 year old Westerbeke genny you'd be surprised to know it's never been out of the ER. (knocking on wood)

I don't see anything wrong with using a spray can for touch-ups or even for complete re-paints, per se. But that's really a separate issue - as Hot & Yummy pointed out, a paint job is all in the prep work. If someone didn't take the time to mask the hoses and clamps (let alone a better way would have been to simply remove them!), it's a pretty safe bet they didn't do much prep (sanding/cleaning) and simply went all willy-nilly with their rattle can to try and make it look nice for the pictures for re-sale... hoping some buyer won't notice or care. Truth is, someone out there will buy it without looking close at it... There's a buyer for every boat, right!

If I see one with a bs paint job I automatically skip over it and mark it off the list. Like you say Capt Steve that is so tacky like listing a boat with 7-8 year old pictures, it ought to be against the LAW !!!!!!!

Cummins paints the entire engine when new, hoses clamps and all.

** Shrugs shoulders and puts back case of black spray paint on shelf.

But seriously that would be one indication of a cover up.

Doing engine room touch up does not mean the owner in covering up anything. To me if done neatly and the owner keeps the engine room clean and does the needed maintenance it shows pride of ownership. I would shy away from a boat with a rusty engine that has cracked hoses and belts with the bilge covered in oil. I routinely wire brush and touch up my engines and generator as part of my maintenance routine.

I touch up the engines often but use Caterpillar paint. I always try to prep the surface as good as possible. We are in fresh water 98% of the time so we don’t get too much corrosion or rust.

I should have quoted the member who said "when you see the hoses and wiring harness painted over".

I think every diesel powered Sea Ray I looked at when I was shopping had all hoses and clamps sprayed the same color white as the engines.
