Canvas Water Proofing Advice

But why not just clean it while it't on the boat and save the time of removing it and taking to a laundry mat?

I don't think you can really ever get it as clean on the boat compared to a washing machine. It also makes it easier to apply the 303 when it's off the boat to ensure you get a good even coat. I did 3 coats on mine.

Just make sure you DON'T put it in the DRYER. It will shrink and you won't get it back on. Let it air dry.

I have washed ours in washer. Put it back on the boat wet or it could shrink. Turned out firm doing that not wrinkles.

Where are you on LI?
My dock is in southwest Suffolk.
I’m shooting for the week after next. Going away 3/27-4/8 and I’d really like to get the bottom done and a good wash in before I leave so I can take care of a few loose ends when I get back and hopefully splash in mid April.
The weather Gods don’t seem to want to cooperate though.

Yep, we're due for a bottom paint and a ton of regular maintenance this spring, plus some special projects and an electronics upgrade. A lot of that will happen after we splash.

I clean it on the boat several times a season with a soft brush when washing the boat.
Running it through the machine once a year gives it a nice deep cleaning.

This spring I plan on giving my camper top canvas a good cleaning. I was planning on applying Sunbrella water proofing after the wash. Has anyone found anything better to use? And I was planning on using a foam paint roller to apply it. Has anyone use this method and is there a better way? The boat is a 40 dancer and I can't reach the middle with the spay bottle that the water proofing comes in.

Midexp, I like the 303 as well, but thought I would let you know what I did this year because your from the same area. I had Steve with Quality Canvas come to the boat last fall and remove the canvas (his idea). That way he could inspect it and check all zippers and stitches. He is going to do any repairs, clean, and waterproof it over the winter. I had a zipper that needed repair is the reason I went this route. He's a great guy that has done all my dock neighbors canvas work. So I've seen his work. Anyway just thought I would let you know in case you want to have it done or need other repairs. Next season I will probably use 303 and do it myself. Like the idea of doing the runners in the cabin and will be doing that this year.

Canvas cleaner day one and then 303 days two or three... I use a paint roller and pan.

If you’re just going to do the interior carpet runners and don’t have any 303 on hand, get a couple of cans of scotchgard from Home Depot. It does the job.

Thanks Ezsteps. I'm kind of a Dennis Miller guy, but I'll keep Steve in mind.

Midexp, what's the name of Dennis' company? His name sounds familiar and I'm wondering if he did my canvas originally. I love the way my canvas fits and would like to have the same guy do it again when the time comes.

Carpet savers I use NIKWAX TECH WASH waterproofer, machine wash gentle and hang dry (do not put them in your dryer). http://www.nikwax.com/en-us/products/productdetail.php?productid=268
Interesting looking product. A little pricey, but interesting.
Do you use it in your home washer or at a laundromat?
I bring big outside canvas pieces to the laundromat and wash them in the really big machines there, but my carpet runners are small and light enough that I do them at home.
Any problems using that product in a home machine?

Ezsteps, Miller Canvas. He's out of Belle Maer, but he does canvas anywhere He's not cheap, but it's a no brainer when you see how your canvas will turn out. Well worth it.

He does great work he did my cockpit canvas for my Baja in 1989 I am just replacing in this year, he also did the canvas on our new to us Sea Ray.

Use a garden sprayer like others have said. Trust me. You’ll use a lot less and be done in 10 minutes. Yes I rolled it on once and never again. It was very tough to get even coverage.
I washed ours at the quarter car wash with help from a buddy and the floor mat clips mounted in the bays.
I also used 303 bought in a gallon online.

I'm almost positive he did mine then. I bought my boat from a guy at BMH through Platium Yacht Sales. I love my canvas. It fits perfect and is the most water tight that I've seen. Will definitely be looking him up when the time comes, hopefully I have a while before I have to do that though.

One of the things you will notice about his work is the inside of the canvas will look just as nice as the outside.

For the Canadians out there, I just noticed that Costco online has 303 one gallon jugs for CAD$79.99 delivered.

Thanks for posting
I found it in the New Item section not with the boating accessories.
Just last week I had taken delivery of 2 of the 32oz Spray bottles packs at $47 each.
I will be returning them and ordering the 1Gallon jug.
Cheers
