What is wrong

Lets not forget that you can build a very powerful bomb with just kerosene and fertilizer.. How exactly do you protect against that? Someone with a basic knowledge of chemistry scares me just as much as a madman with an AR.

I have always been a staunch supporter of the right to own guns.

I have found myself open to how that is managed, within reason. We all have to agree without compromising the basic constitutional premise.

The media (and certain issue oriented groups) question the amendment that provides that right. The desire is for "Washington" to take action.

Let's take that thought further, if owning guns was made to be illegal, does anyone thing that would stop bad people from getting guns?

For all of my life the government has tried to stop the supply of illegal drugs. Hasn't happened. How could just passing a law stop guns?

The issue is not guns, its people.

This is from Ben Shaprio, one of the great young minds out there. If you do not already, read his posts daily for a while. No matter your political leanings he offers great insight at www.DailyWire.com

Every Single Government Authority Failed In Parkland. And They Expect Americans To Forfeit Our Self-Defense Rights To Them?

On Thursday night, the American public learned two bombshell pieces of information regarding the Parkland, Florida mass shooting. First, we learnedthat the Broward County Sheriff’s Office was told in November that the Parkland shooter “could be a school shooter in the making” but deputies didn’t bother to write up a report; that report “came just weeks after a relative called urging BSO to seize his weapons.” Then, in even more shocking news, we learned that an armed school resource officer at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School sat outside and waited for four minutes during the six minute attack that ended in the deaths of 17 human beings.

So, here’s what we know.

We know the FBI was warned specifically about the Parkland shooter not once, but twice — and did nothing.

We know the Broward County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the home of the Parkland shooter at least 39 times since 2010.

We know that the Broward County Sheriff’s Office was warned multiple times about the Parkland shooter.

We know that an armed officer was present during the shooting and did nothing — and that JROTC students showed far more courage.

And yet we are told that the solution to mass shootings is for law-abiding citizens to give more authority to the authorities that failed, and to turn over our only way of protecting ourselves?

Why in the world would a single law-abiding gun owner hand over his or her weapon to the same authorities that did nothing to protect the children of Parkland? Why would a single law-abiding gun owner turn over his or her capacity for self-defense to people who were incapable of defending children at every step of the way?

And why in the world should we blame the NRA, which literally had nothing to do with Parkland, for the failures of every institutional barrier to a massacre? Why should we blame law-abiding gun owners who didn’t shoot up kids for the failures of those who are paid to do stop evil monsters like the Parkland shooter? Why should we take Sheriff Steve Israel seriously when he blames lack of gun control, Dana Loesch, and the NRA, rather than his own radical incompetence and the radical incompetence of those under his authority?

Children are dead not because millions of good citizens own AR-15s, but because dozens of pathetic incompetents and cowards in a position to do something instead did nothing. All the misdirection in the world isn’t going to change that inconvenient fact.

Sadly, the answer is yes. Many people DO think that making guns illegal will stop criminals. Apparently our schools no longer teach critical thinking skills. It is that mindset that is actually preventing real solutions from being implemented, and in that respect they are a huge part of the problem.

- don't harden our schools because the only REAL solution is to ban guns.
- don't tag mental health sufferers, because that may hurt their feewings
- don't implement the death penalty because...well....just because.
- Don't get rid of gun-free zones, because a good-guy with a gun is just another criminal.
- Just add a new law because that's the easiest "solution" and I'm basically lazy.

Hypothetical question here (and likely a dangerous one given the audience!)...

What if there were no guns? Zero. Not a single one. Not the bad guys, not the good guys. Would mass shootings be replaced by something else? I assume they would, but would they be less catastrophic and easier to mitigate and/or control?

I'm not of the belief that making guns illegal will stop them being misused (and for the record, I'm not of the opinion they should unilaterally be made illegal).

I am very sceptical that introducing more guns to the equation will prevent misuse or broadly mitigate the harm they cause.

It appears to me there are simply too many of them, they are too accessible, and the fact that they are a way of life (for both good and evil) results in them being used and misused.

There is no argument that when a gun is fired at a person, the impact is profound...far more profound than any other readily available weapon.

I remember the first time I fired a hand gun, the overwhelming feeling I had was how frightening the thought was of one of these in the hands of anyone remotely on the edge, let alone totally off their rocker. It was also apparent the associated feeling of power could be potentially mind-altering to anyone oppressed.

Remotely on the edge: a kid that's bullied all the time, an overly emotional teen, someone with legitimate mental issues, a husband or wife who just caught their spouse cheating, the crazy juice-monkey freaking out because you took his parking spot, the drunk dude that's takin' no crap from no one, the person that grew up in poverty and never had a decent role model, anyone that has never had any power over any aspect of their life...the list goes on.

Bajturner a responsible gun owner would never bring a firearm into a situation like that one because thats just a terrible idea and two because its completely illegal you can't bring a firearm into a place where they serve alcohol like bars.

Totally agree, but it's not responsible gun owners we worry about.

The terrorists are a step ahead already.
Their methods of attack in the recent past include knives and trucks.

Why? Is it tougher for them to buy a gun but easy to rent a moving truck?

A true, organized terrorist would have no trouble at all obtaining a gun. They would use these other methods because they deem them more effective...or they are a half-baked terrorist that suddenly wanted to kill some infidels.

Terrorists today could rent as many trucks as they want and run over as many people as they want regardless of how many guns are in the hands of good people.

If terrorists are really the concern, guns make it worse because you need to worry about all their crazy methods (trucks, planes, bombs) that guns can't stop, and also their bad guns, which good guns probably can't control either.

I didn't mean make them illegal, I meant if you could magically make them all go away...hypothetically. If you could, would there be less mass killings?
You might get to see a real time answer to that question. There's approximately 4 million kids each year that become eligible to vote, pee them off and watch what happens.

If the youth become dissatisfied, tired of being shot up by the crazys walking the streets, guns could be gone and every current politician will be living in a van down by the river.

We don't have to imagine what would happen if their were no guns, just go to any other country in the world. They have a fraction of the gun violence that we have. We have this love of guns because it turns us on to have one. We feel like big men when we have a gun. A law abiding gun owner is a trigger pull away from being a criminal. Every gun criminal had a first time prior to which they were law abiding. The argument that we need guns for protection or to resist the government is not supported by the facts. Some people just like guns and need to admit that they are the problem.

Sorry Boston, but your comments are so much BS it's hard to eve believe they were written by an adult. "Big men" because we have a gun? Law abiding gun owner a trigger pull away from being a criminal? Not needing a gun for protection?

Let me ask you this---when there is someone you don't know banging loudly on the front door in the middle of the night and you're on the phone with 911 and they're telling you the cops should be there within 5 minutes (typical response time), what are you going to do to protect your family?

Negotiate with the guy? Sweet talk him?

I'm waiting and listening for what you have to say. After I hear what you have to say I'll tell you how I would respond. FWIW

Boston, one further note after rereading your post. "any other country in the world"? Really? Really? One only need look at many of the areas of Sub-Saharan Africa to see many countries where ethnic cleansing has resulted in the deaths of millions of people by gunfire.

Also, look at the 10 most dangerous cities in our country: Detroit, St. Louis, Oakland, Memphis, Birmingham, Atlanta, Baltimore, Cleveland, Stockton and Buffalo.

If you remove the gun crimes done in those cities from the rest of the US you will find that our incidence of gun violence is in about the middle of other "first world" countries.

Also, it's interesting to note that some of those cities have the most stringent gun laws. It's also interesting to note that all of those top 10 cities have been ruled by the Democratic party for a long time with no change in sight.

Just sayin'

OK ,so Boston isn't responding, So tell us what you would do. The suspense is killing me or is it killing him. LOL
85 n sunny again damn it...gotta go for a boat ride. Will be back in a few to hear the answer.

Damn, my father and now myself must be really be men. See as a NASA engineer he supplemented his income as a gunsmith. When folks couldn't pay the bill for the hunting rifle he would take other firearms in trade, most were junk and used for parts. Some were wall hangers such as my 1800's Springfield. Add in my collection of Colts and Remington Darrengers ...
If you own a gun to make yourself feel like a big man all you are doing is fooling yourself

I think I will let the other members deal with Boston

scoflaw, I'd hate to personally be responsible for your early demise so I won't wait for Boston to come back though I would like
to hear what he has to say.

OK in the scenario where someone is banging on my door in the middle of the night, the first thing I would do is get 911 on the line and keep the line open so they can hear and record what is going on.
#2 I would arm myself
#3 I would take a position of cover where I could see the front door but if he got in he would not immediately see me.
#4 No interior lights on
#5 I would tell him in no uncertain terms that I was armed and the cops are on the way.

Keep in mind everything I say and the background noises (pounding on the door) are being recorded and will be available to replay in court if it ever goes that far.

I would hope that at that point he would leave. If he continues to bang on the door I would wait until it looked like he was about to gain entry. Now keep in mind that I have no duty to discern what it is he wants to do when he breaks in. I don't have to try to decide in advance if he just wants to use the bathroom or if he wants to rob us or kill us. Not my duty and I won't go there.

If he does appear to be about to get in I will shoot him in defense of my life and the lives of anyone else in the house. Contrary to popular belief I do not have to wait until he is IN the house. If he's about to break down the door or kick the lock and break it, he's going to be a very unhappy guy. I do not and will not let him enter my home. I don't need to discern if he's drunk or stoned or mentally unstable. Not my job and I'm not going to take a moment to worry about it.

If this ever ends up going to court I will have the 911 recording to verify that I told him the cops were on the way and that I was armed. I will need to articulate to as judge or jury the fear I had in my mind about the safety of my life and the others in the house.

Here's what WA's law about Justifiable Homicide says:
RCW 9A.16.050
Homicide—By other person—When justifiable.

Homicide is also justifiable when committed either:
(1) In the lawful defense of the slayer, or his or her husband, wife, parent, child, brother, or sister, or of any other person in his or her presence or company, when there is reasonable ground to apprehend a design on the part of the person slain to commit a felony or to do some great personal injury to the slayer or to any such person, and there is imminent danger of such design being accomplished; or
(2) In the actual resistance of an attempt to commit a felony upon the slayer, in his or her presence, or upon or in a dwelling, or other place of abode, in which he or she is.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Any further questions? If would benefit all of you to research what your state law says about Justifiable Homicide. That gives you the latitude to protect yourself.
scoflaw, Glad to see you're still alive. I was worried. The slayer is the guy who killed the bad guy. In my scenario above I would be the slayer if the guy breaking in ended up dead.
