Hi Everyone,

I am looking to add a GPS to my boat and was wondering what people like about theirs and the items you couldn't live without.

Also with all the technology are their apps for smart phones people are using and have had good luck with in place of the fixed mount GPS?

Thank you in advance for posting!

I have an old northstar 6000i on my boat, and instead of using that, I use my iPad and the Navionics maps/chart plotter app. It stores my tracks, routes, and can perform auto routing, just provide the start and end point, and it will route you through the water keeping you in good depths.
It will be hard to see in direct sunlight, so if that is an issue on your boat, maybe spring for the fixed mount. I have a good Bimini and in most conditions have no issue.

Now that is awesome! Pretty sure I am going to go the Navionics Route for the season and seeing how that works out!

Direct sunlight is a problem with any tablet based solution. I'm installing a Garmin 7610XSV. Great chart plotter and sonar combination. It has WiFi which allows me to mirror to my iPad, as well as use the iPad to update its charts, routes, waypoints, firmware, etc.

We're going with the Raymarine Axiom MFDs along with Navionics maps. Putting a Quantum up top for radar. I like the app based charts as a backup just in case.

I have a small helm and I did not want to mount something on top of the panel or blocking gauges so I recently flush mounted the SIMRAD GO5. It has a very clear & bright 5" display, has touch-screen technology, is Wi-Fi capable for downloading charts and the installation was a breeze. I did not need the fish finder so I bought without the transducer.

Here are a couple of pics of my install....

Since I did not have a transducer installation was a snap. 3 wires.... I have Navionics charts on my iPad that I purchased and all I had to do was make the Wi-Fi connection between the 2 and all of my charts transferred. And I love that there is only one button....the power button. All other controls are by touch.

I bought mine at West Marine and caught them when they were having an electronics sale so I got $50 off and used a couple of coupons as well. They also have larger units. In fact, in hindsight, my only regret is I think I could have had space for the 7". Oh well....
