Sailboat Sinks, Sad End To The Dream...

I grew up following the story of Robin Lee Graham in National Geographic as he started sailing around the world at the age of 16 in 1965. 30,000 miles and 5 years later ......it was a great story filled with all the crazy things that could go wrong on such an adventure. It was an inspiring story where a lot of preparation paid off. No sat phones or GPS just a compass, sextant, charts and two kittens.

I pulled the following image from a google search I did for him today. Sadly, once he returned to land....things did not turn out well for him.

and somehow the La Vagabonde crew managed a new Outremer catamaran last year - but they didn't ask us to pay for it.

I watch all three of these and a handful more. And although La Vagabonde did not specifically "ask" for anyone to pay for it, essentially that's exactly how they earn their money (to the tune of roughly $500K-$750K a year), by people donating money to their Patreon account which currently earns them $9,656 per video that they make (typically 5 +/- videos per month) plus the additional income from their youtube videos. I will give them credit, they have become extremely successful doing what they are doing.
As far as the couple who just sank their boat, I tend to agree with most of the others. They made the choice/mistake (several poor choices/mistakes actually) and now they are successfully getting other people to pay for it. Based on this theory, everyone who bought, and lost, cars, houses, boats, etc. that they could not afford should have all that money donated back to them by everyone else who works hard for a living (and isn't "burnt out" by the age of 24/26).

Sheeze, now we know how they got the Outremer! But unlike these two, they produce videos for a YouTube channel, they are not begging people for $$, they are essentially selling a product. They have figured out how to create a business sailing. I'm thinking about becoming a Patreon, maybe I will get invited for a visit! I do enjoy their videos.

But back to the couple at hand, totally different situation - got in over their head and are now asking for a handout so thing can fix things.

They made the 5 oclock news in this area, Their story was different and a lot was left out of the news story. Was funny knowing what is on here and what they said and they didn't say anything about their go fund me account just that they didn't know how they were going to pay to get the boat towed out!!

You have just described the Liberal / Democratic political platform! I knew they'd be Democrats!

I agree with almost all the responses “screw em” you tube is full of millenial beggars who have a go pro and a drone ,quit they’re jobs and and beg for patreons to pay they’re way to a great life. Let them learn the hard way that you can’t support 2 people on $10,000 for long. Bad planning bad training (by dad) bad parenting (by dad) if they don’t have a you tube channel I guarantee it was about to launch
Had they made money in a JOB and was in a position to retire at 25 yrs old I’d have more respect than quitting /destroying everything you have/ and asking others to pay to remove your navigational hazard laying in an Inlet...
am I the only one who’s pissed at these moron dreamers? (There’s my political stab)
GFM was designed to help people that just ran out of options in life or have come across a mountain they just can’t climb.
I’m sorry but this doesn’t qualify in my book now get your damn boat out of the way of others..

I follow a few couples on youTube that have done this (MJ Sailing, Sailing LaVagabonde, Sean & Julia Sailing) - they are chasing a dream also, just a little (a lot) more prepared and smart about it. None of these couples started off with fancy new boats, either (a little bigger than 28ft), and somehow the La Vagabonde crew managed a new Outremer catamaran last year - but they didn't ask us to pay for it. MJ Sailing bought a aluminum hull of a mess and spent two years in a boat yard restoring it. They all fund some of their adventure through Patreon - subcribe and pay to support their videos, or don't, it's your choice. I have not seen any of them use go fund me to solicit $$, they all seem to realize the funding and responsibility of their lifestyle is on them. Sometimes this means you quit sailing and go to work to replenish the kitty. If I were 30yrs younger and had a good looking Aussie girl to go off sailing around the world with, I just might start a Go Fund Me - just sayin.

I guess my point is, there are people out there doing this the right way - I've watched the ones I mentioned above plan, wait for weather, plan their arrival around tides, daylight, etc - not go blindly into an unknown inlet at night. Granted some of them have run into trouble, you have to figure something is going to happen when you start sailing all over and into unknown waters - but they are prepared to handle it - well mostly - at least none of them has lost a boat yet. But these two, I am not saying they had it coming, but anyone could have seen this one coming, they should count themselves lucky it happened in US waters close to shore and not in some remote place where they might have lost their lives also. No $$, no insurance, no plan, no sympathy. If I knew the $$ was going to help Remy the Pug I might contribute - he deserves better.

Check out SV Delos if you want another good YouTube channel. They’ve been at sea for over 7 years I believe, the videos are also very well done.

Yeah I've seen that one also, I enjoy watching these - starting to think a sailboat might be fun - oh boy did I really just say that!

I thought the same but we went across lake ontario this summer in 2 hours at 25 knots. 8 hours later a sailboat came and slipped next to us, they left the same area as us at the same time. No thanks, lol

You're right about one part of what you wrote: I'm far removed from my early 20's. Fifty years removed to be more exact.

Maybe because I had the good fortune to grow up on and boat on Lake Huron and be exposed to the horrific storms that can come roaring down the lake. Given the experience with those storms, there's no way in hell I would have ventured out like they did.

The sad thing about that whole venture is what they did exposed not only themselves to danger but also those who came to their rescue and those who had to remove the boat.

They had their heads so far up their arses it gave them tunnel vision and enabled them to ignore all of the common sense warnings that normal people are aware of and heed.

Sorry Woody, but I'm getting damned tired of these people who just thing "Well, hell, I can do that...." Their lack of intelligent planning ranks right up there with the guy who says "Hey Bubba. Hold my beer and watch this."
