Official 380 Thread

WOW. Great price. A friiend had all his cockpit stuff redone in his 410DA, including those upholstered side panels, and it was around $4k.
True the entire cockpit with a two colors is approx $4k. My backs and helm seating are in good shape. Seam on aft cushion was separating so there ya go! Mine is a partial. I also did all removal / install myself so may have saved a bit

Thank you all for the information . My Concern is keeping the SeaRay Logo where applicable. The Cockpit Area was exposed to the weather for quite sometime, un-cared for. I imagine it will be a complete recovering needed . Does anyone know the company who sold material to SeaRay ?

Morning, with respect to SeaRay logo on seat backs, your upholstery shop can duplicate that stitched insignia. Or the shops I have talked with can.
Best wishes on finding a capable upholstery shop.

Still searching for a 380 Dancer... Some available boats have 7.4s vs the 8.1s and I'm a little concerned that the 380 would be under powered with 7.4s. I plan on running in 3'-4' seas as I cruise in the Buzzard's Bay area in MA, and we have those conditions regularly, so an under powered boat is not really what I'm looking for.

Thoughts appreciated! Thanks!

I started out looking at 380’s before shifting to the 410.
One thing I was looking for on the 380’s was to make sure it had the updated water lift muffler exhaust system. Later boats had it and some earlier boats were retrofitted with it.

Yeah, several 410s out there too. Trying to not get kicked out of my marina for going too big... and trying to keep the work load to manageable. I really don't NEED to go that big (410), as the 380 is the right size for us. We have seen a few 410s and do like them of course!

When I was searching I immediately ruled out any boats with 7.4s, not because of power, but b/c of the water ingestion problems. If you see a 7.4 with log mufflers, run. If it has water lift mufflers that's better, but I'd still steer clear.

Somewhere around 2002 is when the 8.1s were being factory installed. Many of the 99-01's were repowered b/c of catastrophic failure of the originally installed 7.4s.

Got it! Good to know...

This also applies to gas 410DAs and 340DAS of the same era (outfitted wirh 7.4s). All related to a combination of poor exhaust design and the tendency of that last generation of 7.4's to suck back water. Something to do with the valve timing that GM setup to maximize fuel economy in land vehicles . Water lift mufflers helped but you don't know what kind of damage was done prior to an exhaust retrofit.

can anyone post s pic of the wrong and the correct exhaust set up. If the boat has been afloat since 2000 would the problem have been evident by now ? or fixed by now ???

In all liklihood, by now, if the boat had 7.4s, they've blown up and been repaired/rebuilt or replaced. But if they are still running on all original equipment, I would NOT buy one. I didn't even bother looking at one. For me, it was 8.1s or nothing.

This boat has LOG mufflers and 7.4s. The description says they are 8.1s but these engines are NOT 8.1s. There are 3 engine room shots.. The third one shows the horizontal black log muffler. Besides being WAYYYYYYYYYYYY overpriced, this is not the boat you want to buy.

This doesn't have engine room shots but the above listing and this one show the incompetence of some brokers. The 380DA does NOT have a "fully cored" hull. Solid bottom on these and ALL Sea Rays built at the Merritt Island plant (HIN designations that start with "SERF").

Another one with 7.4s and logs...

This is what 8.1s and water-lift mufflers look like. See the big rubber elbow that exits from a can-looking thing just aft of the motor? That's a water lift muffler. The 8.1 motor itself looks NOTHING like the 7.4, esp when you compare the exhaust manifold elbow design.

RONDDS is offering up solid advice.
I narrowed my search to the later 02-04 380’s when I was looking at them because of the exhaust.

so if the boat has 600 hours on it would you not discern that it is not a problem ???? I am looking at a 2000 that seems original this is the engine compartment If this is a potential problem what is the fix

The fix depends on the problem. I'd DEFINITELY do a compression test and probably even a leakdown test. Pull the spark plugs that lie below each exhaust elbow and ck for rust (won't matter if they replaced them recently). And I'd price what it costs to convert to water lift mufflers. Water intrusion will first effect the cylinders below the exhaust elbows (I forget the numbers). If there's a problem you'll see poor compression numbers in these cylinders. Then you have to figure out if it's the valves or the cylinders or both. Leakdown helps with that determination.

But quite honestly, I'd cross this and any Sundancer 380, 410 or 340 with these motors and log mufflers off my list. And I'm not telling you to do something that I didn't do. Call me paranoid, but I feel pretty strongly about this.

Marc,

If you need to look at other boats, I believe there are a couple of 380's with 8.1's just across the pond from you.

I agree. That’s the old style exhaust.
