Official 19SPX/21SPX/SPX190/SPX210 Thread

Hi, I have a question about height engine - how is it hangingi 19/190 SPX Outboard? I bought a new boat 190SPX OB with Mercury 4 stroke 150HP - and my engine is hunged like on picture below. Is it good position? Sometimes I think that the engine should be hunged lower (maybe about 2 holes for bolt lower) - I can see on different pictures (in internet) that sometimes it is in the same position - sometimes I see the engine is hunged lower... I noticed on the water, that my boat likes to catch cavitation (or ventilation) - especially when I turn.
Could you answear me - how it is in your boats - especially in 190 SPX OB?

So - It is good in my boat? (on my picture - it is 4th hole).

I wouldn't think so if the prop ventilates in a simple turn. If you're sure you aren't trimmed up too far, take it back to Searay and have them take a look. With a 5 year warranty, most all SPXs are still under warranty. Make them fix it.

Sorry for my inquiery :)
But on the Boot Dusseldorf in Germany (boat fair) I met mechanics from factory, where SR 190 is built (in Augustów, Poland :) ) and they said, that it should be second hole from the top - and I saw it on boat on stand - it was second hole, the engine was lower - but now nobody can confirm it.
That's way I ask you...

I asked the same question because I find it very easy to over trim. Someone else had mentioned that there motor was lower, the performance was better but they lost 5 mph on the top end.

OK, thanks - so I'm waiting for more informations / replyes from forum colegues who has got a model 190 OB.

Please, write about hunging your engine Mercury 150 - which way is the best, which way is the most correct...

Hi all,
We bought a '17 21 spx last spring (we replaced a '93 SR 180 BR that we used heavily for the past 20 years). I read all of your posts when doing my research for the new boat so I thought I would add our feedback for future buyers. We've put about 100 hours on the new boat so far.
We like the layout and the engine on the new spx a lot. The walk-through transom is REALLY nice. The big swim platform is great. We have the snap-in fabric floor covering; it looks great (but gets kind of hot in full sun--have to wear flip flops). The stereo sounds great. We REALLY like the seating arrangement. I can't say enough about how nice the seating arrangement is. We can fit a lot of people comfortably. The engine is great, pulls big adults out of the water with no problems. It stays at a steady speed without a lot of adjustments (old boat was terrible about this). The engine is noticeably quieter than our old v6 i/o. The skiing is good, the tubing and wake boarding is fine. It's not a wakeboard boat but we do it anyway. We like the wakeobard tower (didn't want it but the dealer only had one with it); it's super nice and sturdy and everybody holds on to it as they get in and out of the boat and it's nice for the bimini to be on a super secure frame. The tower looks good too. We have to lower it to put the boat on our lift so that's a little bit of a pain but not really.
The following are some things we aren't crazy about:
Wish the fuel fill was on a horizontal surface so you can easily fill with a gas can from a dock. Super inconvenient for us on the side.
The seats in the bow aren't secure, we've had people step on them from the dock and the seats move and the person will slip.
The seats don't dry out underneath so the bottoms and edges are always moldy (this never happend on my old boat..)
The searay logos have all fallen off or are loose (Searay replaced them but..)
The graphics on the side are very thin and have already scratched through to white in one place (scratch is our error but I can't imagine how it will look in 20 years).
The bilge pump doesn't pump all of the water out. There is always a little water in the floor ski storage so it is moldy (can't use it for storing skis). Again this never happened on my old boat.
The drivers seat doesn't pivot easily; it's awkward. (But it does have the flip up bolster which is awesome).
The hinge and upholstery on the flip up sun pad is weak so it doesn't stay firm/upright like you want it to. (We don't use this much b/c it feels kind of flimsy and it's a bad angle--we thought we would but just don't).
The foam in the seats is insufficient so they are uncomfortable after an hour of sitting (not a huge deal for us b/c we are in and out a lot but for some people I would think this would be a big deal).
It would be nice to have air assist on the wakeboard tower so 1 person could lower it by themselves. (I have an adjustable pole that I (awkwardly) use so I can do it solo but it's not pretty).
The scuppers don't drain completely so there is always wet funky dirt in them.
The trim gauge isn't helpful; when the trim is fully up it shows about 1/4 up on the gauge so the top 3/4s of the gauge are useless. Basically, can't use the gauge at all, just have to use the sound/bow to tell where it is.
You can't see the stereo in the daylight at all. Have to cover the screen to block all sun to see it.

Overall, we like the layout and the engine (big improvements over the '93 180BR) but a lot of the details on this boat are bad. The finish feels a bit cheap and doesn't work as well as you would hope. Our '93 Searay was MUCH better overall so we are somewhat disappointed with this boat. I'm happy to offer more feedback/answer questions.

Hi all,

Had the same issue on my '17 210SPX OB. If you have the PMX-2 radio and the "Dimmer" button doesn't seem to do anything check if the Orange "Illumination" wire is wired to constant 12v. It was in my case which kept the radio in the lower illumination setting. You can either just cut the wire and use the button at night or wire it to a proper gauge light source. The "brighter" setting isn't real bright but at least it's better.

Thanks! I will check this out for sure and let you know if I am able to fix it.

Hi my name is Tom and I'm new to this club and forum as you can see. I'm considering purchasing a 190 SPX and am looking for any input. Especially on motor choice, any pros or cons would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to your responses..
Resurrecting your post from last December, Tom, as I thought of it when I just came across this video on YouTube (shameless! :p )

By the way, and just curious, which direction have you gone, with your purchase?

@ThorSen - could you look at your engine - how high is assembled - is it 4th hole from the top?
(look at my question in earlier posts on 12th side)

Fourth hole from top is where SR here in the States says it SHOULD be mounted.(SR bulletin SR 17-06) Mine was mounted lower and I received the bulletin to have it corrected. Several 190 SPX owners here with the 150 OB positioned "the way it should be" have had similar trim issues as you are experiencing. I do not! So I'm leaving mine as is. Which is 2 positions lower in the water. If your unhappy with the performance you may want to have your outboard lowered. SR stated this was not a safety reason for the bulletin, but a "performance" related bulletin. I'm very happy with the way my boat performs. On another note, this is my 4th SR and NONE of them liked trim. Keep trim fully down, pop up on plane, adjust a tad if needed. Good luck, Brian

Thanks a lot!
Now I will not change it, but I will observe trim and performance.

Mandus, apologies on not replying; I don’t get a chance to log-on here and check-in quite as much as I’d like to. I see Bridog’s post as being pretty conclusive; however; next time I get down to our dock I will snap a pic and report back, even if for my own curiosity.

Brian, thanks - the Admiral and I were just talking yesterday about how her trying different trim positions with the motor and prop - to get an actual feel for what changes occur, etc. - will be a good excuse for us to splash her boat, ahead of what we hope will be many visitors to be pulled behind the boat, this summer!

Thanks ThorSen. I'm no expert on outboards since my last 4 SR's were I/O's but just sharing what I've experienced and what others on here have noted about using trim. That said I'm with you about needing an excuse to go boating. We've had an unusually cold Winter (all 2 months of it ;) and I've been super busy at work. Man, I'm getting withdrawals! Hopefully this weekend will start us back up. Have fun. Brian

Anyone know offhand which Racor water separating fuel filter is most appropriate (correct) for the Mercury 150hp 4-stroke engines?

DISREGARD, Found My Answer (Got the tech at Mercury on the horn); its not a Racor but rather, Mercury Marine OEM but the entire kit (filter and install hardware) is Mercury Marine Part # 8M0109543 ("MERCURY MARINE WATER SEPARATING FUEL FILTER W REMOTE ALARM KIT")
Other minutiae (in case it assists anyone else who likes to keep part #'s handy for regular maintenance ... I've found that organizing a list like below for all our "toys" makes shopping for maint. items quick and efficient (and, let's face it, assembling parts, etc. is 1/ the "battle" when it comes to keeping toys tuned! :)

Got started on the audio upgrade to the base system tonight. Step 1, add bow speakers. I decided to grab another pair of Rockford Fosgate 6.5" Coax RM0652 to match the factory cockpit speakers. (FYI, a seller on ebay accepted my offer of $75 w/ free shipping for a new set) Other than tools and tape, nothing else was required as Sea Ray was nice enough to include the upgrade prewiring connected to the stock head unit, including standard female spade terminals. Taped them off, found the center, drew a circle, cut em out, and screwed them in. (make sure you use a shop vac for dust control)

Very worthwhile 1-2 hour, $75 upgrade for anyone with the base 2 speaker system.

Excuse the poor pics, getting dark by the time I finished up.
How did you find out the pre-wiring is already there? I’m hesitant about cutting into the boat to find out I now have to run all the wiring. If it’s a simple plug and play after cutting out the hole I’m interested. TIA.

Was a pleasant surprise. You should be able to look up in the locker under the radio and see the wiring. It uses standard aftermarket color scheme, so you should see those colors split from the harness and go forward.
