The more I read, the more I think all this can be done with ipads!! Seriously.

Raymarine has the Quantum wifi only... add in a Navionics charts on another and I think you would have 90% of what most need.

You'll still need a MFD for radar though. Unless they've developed compatibility with tablets. There were some complaints with iPads about visibility in bright light and heating up/shutting down.

Radar (at least with Garmin) is NOT NMEA2k. It's a specialized plug that runs from the scanner directly to the back of the unit. And that cable is not NMEA2k cable and does not utilize NMEA2k connectors.

I believe each manufacturer has their own special plug for Radar, which does not allow you to mix and match manufacturers. As far as Ray stuff, I was able to connect my Ray AP and VHF via NMEA0183, but not the TriData. That is purely SeaTalk. Someone said above that SeaTalk is really just NMEA0183 with a fancy Ray plug. If that's true maybe I could cut the plug off and splice wires to get the TriData stuff onto the Garmin (??)

My Garmin radar is pretty much the latest technology, sanz the function that tracks a moving target by showing it in red.
See my above post - Seatalk/Seatalk1 are not NMEA 0183 compatible - need an adapter. Seatalk is a duplex buss; NMEA 0183 require separate buss's for each talker unless a multiplexer is added.

+1 that. Only hope would be to have 0183 and Seatalk meet at your autopilot, or get a bridge adapter. My ST1G has both. Not sure what your model is.

It's a ST8001 2G which requires a Seatalk interface to the E120 MFD's.
The Course Computer has NEMA 0183 inputs and outputs which I have the Ray GPS connected.
FYI the NMEA 0183 terminals on the Course Computer (Labeled as "NMEA") have limited functionality and cannot be used as a "bridge" to the displays for other NMEA 0183 devices. I found this out when I tried to interface my VesselView7 NMEA2000 interface to it through an Actisense NGW-1 NMEA2000 to NMEA 0183 converter.
And, FYI if you have a Seatalk2 interface and use it to connect NMEA2000 devices (Seatalk2 is partially compatible NMEA2000 with Raymarine special connectors) the MFD will automatically disable the Seatalk/Seatalk1 port which your autopilot needs; It's a real mess to deal with in forward compatibility.

My understanding is the Quantum radar transmit over wifi only (not hard wired connection only power). I would agree that the daylight readability and heat of the ipads could be an issue.

I bought a used e80 and e120, updated the array.

I just bought a 2001 460 Dancer with all original electronics. i'm keeping the rn300,st700+ and the st60. I'm replacing the rl80c and 220 vhf with a Raymarine Axiom 12 mfd, Raymarine ais 650, 4 ft HD open array antenna and a Standard Horizon 5500s.

Congrats and best of luck Knot! Does your 220 still work? More specifically, the mic?

Did you happen to take pictures? I'm about to go through the same stuff. Thanks!

Looks great, thank you so much! Did you end up getting a new panel? If so, where did you get it?

Got a new panel for the Axium 12" from Tecnografic Inc. You just tell them what unit you have and they cut the opening for you. It was a perfect fit. The AIS is behind the MFD.

Sweet Baby Jesus!!!! That's a nice setup!!!!

Curious if the second Axiom in the dash is 7" or 9". Trying to decide if I can fit a 9" front and center. I have the smaller side pod with a 12" stuffed in it.
7"...couldn't get the 9 to fit even if centered. I could have mounted a 9" under the 12 but I wanted something straight ahead. The control panel remote can control either MFD although I've been using the touch only so far.

I saw a new panel over in the 380 thread where the switches were moved outboard and the 9" sat front and center...I might knock that off if I get around to it ever.

Amajamar Did this --> See post # 1591 http://www.clubsearay.com/index.php?threads/official-380-thread.12200/page-80
