I know this has been discussed because I read it at some point but search results aren’t finding it.

I am finding it a little difficult to locate Quicksilver 25W-40 synthetic gallons. I’ve found quarts at varying prices from $9.00 and up but I need 18 of them. I would much rather buy 4 gal + 2 quarts.

First, does anyone have a good source and second does anyone have good science behind substituting a different oil for standard horizon 8.1’s? Oh and if anyone knows the part number for the oil filter...
Thanks

Does your manual allow you to use regular oil. Ours gives us a list of oil type. We use SAE 40. Motors have 2950 hours on them and do not burn any oil and boat goes just as fast as it did when we got it. I change the oil every 100+ hours.

This is from the chart recommended in order:
MerCruiser/ Quicksilver Synthetic Blend,
NMMA FC-W rated, 4-cycle oil
MerCruiser / Quicksilver 25W40 NMMA FC-W rated oil
A NMMA FC-W rated oil
MerCruiser / Quicksilver 4-cycle 25W40, non FC-W rated oil
And below based on air temp
SAE 20W
SAE30W
SAE40W

We have used SAE 40 for 2500 hours. Some time hard to get. I like the shell better but hard to get. Been using Delco for some time. Water temperature in areas we go are 10 to 15 Celsius. Air temperature low 15 high 30 Celsius. Lots of opinions on oil. It is cheap compared to rebuilding an engine. We also run the boat at 1300 to 1600 RPM most of the time but go to 3800 for about 5 hours a year to get out of bad weather or to make a tide crossing in narrows.

On the 8.1, you can use any major brand of SAE 40 or 15w40 and it is fine. You can also use 15w50 Mobil1 available at Walmart.

If you have the remote filter on your 8.1, you have infinite filter choices. Fram TG5 is the oversized (tall) filter that fits perfect and is readily available. Here are some others:
Oil filter 35-866340q03, 881126k01 h perf, Napa 1060 (sfl31060, pfl41060) , Fram tg5 or xg5, purolator Pl34631, carquest 85060

If you want to stick to an oil exactly within Mercs recommendation of a 25w40 fcw Nmma certified synthetic blend oil, Mystik ( Citgo) makes a certified one. Citgo makes all of the Merc oils as well.
You can order it online as low as $17/ gal with very reasonable shipping. Just ordered some 2 weeks ago since new boat is under warranty so want to stay exactly within Merc requirements for now. Under $20 gal shipped to me.

Just a side note.

I just at my local WalMart and they have both Quicksilver 25w-40 conventional and synthetic blend in quarts and gallons at pretty good prices. I was pleasantly surprised.

Walmart has it here too. If yours doesn’t have it you might try ordering it on their website or through their app and taking the option for picking up the order in the store.
I needed 13 gallons of 30 weight Rotella for my two 3126 Cats and was able to get it from Walmart that way.
